Bryan Bennett to transfer

The off and on again saga of Bryan Bennett continues. A source close to the situation indicates Bennett took a secret visit to Southeastern Louisiana during the weekend.

A second source confirmed the news late Monday morning.

Southeastern Louisiana will start classes Tuesday and Bennett will enroll then.

As DuckTerritory indicated just a short time ago, Bennett decided to stay at Oregon and make a move to the defensive side of the ball, namely outside linebacker.

However consistent pressure forced Bennett to evaluate his options and has led him to enroll immediately (as soon as this week) at Southeastern Louisiana.

Bennett was a quality backup to Marcus Mariota after losing the job this Fall. Mariota is the clear leader of the team with Spring Ball set to approach.

Although the decision for Bennett was considered difficult to make, he will be offered immediately playing time and a clear path to the starting quarterback position.

Oregon is now left with two redshirt freshman on the quarterback depth chart following the departure of Bennett.

The Ducks are currently recruiting junior college quarterback Tanner McEvoy who would provide immediate depth if he commits to Oregon.

isnt he better then southern Louisiana? i feel like he could start for half the pac 12 schools. or a non BCS power right?

Yes he is but the problem is that he wants to play right away. If he left to an FCS school he can play right away.If he went to an FBS school he'd be forced to sit a year and only have one year of eligibility.

Want to wish Bryan the best. I always had really high hopes for ihm after watching Crespi vs Servette (sp?) during his senior season. He made tons of amazing throws/run in that game. I think he would have been a very good Oregon QB if it weren't for Mariota. It was awesome he stayed at Oregon this past season when the team needed him most. I hope he tears it up!

pac-12 would require 2 year sit out I believe
other Div. 1 would require 1 year...
don't think he has the eligibility

Bennett had pondered making a move to OLB or most recently to FS but decided in the end he wanted to play quarterback and his best position I am told. Can't fault a kid for giving his best at Oregon and then sticking it out in hopes of playing time.

He is, but he would have to sit a year and then only have one year to play. Transferring down a level he doesn't have to sit.

Really crazy developments with this story over the past week or so. Bennett was all but set to slide over to defense, but with Kelly and Azzinaro on the way out, I think Bennett may have felt some uncertainty with his future. In any event, I'd expect Bennett to compete and ultimately win the starting QB job at SE Louisiana.

Ive seen QB's look pretty bad and put it together late in their careers. With his arm and athleticism he could play in the NFL. He just needs reps and he'll have to improve. I wouldn't bet on in based on what I saw this year, but I can't fault him for chasing that dream. Enough hard work and its certainly possible. I'll be interested to see if he goes the Cam Newton route and transfers back into FBS his last year or if he stays in FCS for 2 years.

I think we all will be cheering for Bryan next year. I also think it is really tough to change positions and start on a Top 5 college team. We all appreciate him staying this year to give MM a good backup. Good Luck Bryan!!!
This is so Chip Kelly - instead of leaving when it is best for them and would really hurt the team, they both stayed another year to make sure all our Ducks were in a row. Just think if both Bryan and Chip would have left before this season.... I am also not sure it was Chip that kept Bryan here and with Chip gone, he was more open to leaving...

Cam Newton was better than Blinn College, but he needs to play this year if he wants a chance to have a good enough 2014 season to be considered draftable.

Cam went Juco, not FCS. He still had 2 years of eligibility when he went to Auburn. Different situation.

A head scratcher move. Wish him the best. A degree from SELU is a little different than a UO degree as are the facilities and competition. Certainly he will get to play as their football team was 5-6 last year, beating Nicholls State 35-16 in their last game, but they lost to Sam Houston State 70-0.
