Ducks avoid sweep and get big win

It wasn’t pretty and it needed a grind it out effort but the Oregon men’s basketball team got a huge road victory Sunday evening against Stanford 68-64 and improved to 19-8 overall and 10-5 in Pac-12 play.

Olu Ashaolu added his 2nd double-double of the season off the bench.

Junior E.J. Singler led the Ducks with 20 points, 14 coming in the second half, along with five rebounds and three assists in 38 minutes.

Senior forward Olu Ashaolu came off the bench and in a huge way by chipping in his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds in 27 minutes. Senior Devoe Joseph added 12 points for the Ducks.

Stanford was led by senior forward Josh Owens who scored 20 points to go with five rebounds and two steals for the Cardinal. Sophomore Dwight Powell added 11 points for the Ducks.

Oregon was able to scratch and claw their way back into the game after a very slow start offensively and got their first lead of the game with just 8:49 left when Ashaolu grabbed one of five offensive rebounds and scored a layup and was fouled. He made the free throw and the Ducks led the game 52-51.

The win now moves the Ducks into a fourth-place tie with Arizona with three regular season games remaining on the docket.

What plagued the Ducks against Cal on Thursday was what won the game for Oregon Sunday, a late run. Oregon went on a late 14-2 run over the final 6:07 of the game and victory was theirs.

Singler scored 10 straight during that 14-2 stretch for Oregon that had Carlos Emory add a layup to start the run.

The Ducks are now 9-1 on the season when they hold their opponent to under 70 points.

E.J. Singler was huge all night and especially in the second half.

The Ducks got their second and final lead of the game when Singler hit a huge three on the wing to make it 66-64 with 2:47 left in the game.

Oregon was able to get a few key defensive rebounds and then Joseph iced the game with two free throws with under five seconds left to seal the victory.

The four-point win now gives Oregon a 12-3 record this season when the game has been decided by less than 10 points. Breaking that stat down even more according to Oregon’s Sports Information Department the Ducks are 5-2 in games less than five points.

Singler’s 20 points scored gives him now 1,015 points making him the 31st Oregon Duck to score over 1,000 points in a career. After scoring his 1,000th point Singler also passed Antoine Stoudamire (1010) and Bill Drozdiak (1012) and now sits 29th all-time in Oregon history.

Joseph reached double-figures in scoring for the 13th straight game and has scored 10 or more points in 20 out of 21 games played this season.

The Ducks have now swept Stanford this season for the first time since 1984-1985.

Oregon will play just one game next week, at Oregon State on Sunday for a rematch from the last Civil War that Oregon State won in Eugene, OR.
