The Ducks continue to mine the Northern part of California and has done it again with Greenbrae (Calif.) Marin Catholic quarterback Morgan Mahalak.
Mahalak plans to lead a recruiting campaign titled "Autzen Army 2014."
Earlier today the 6-foot-3, 190-pound prep was offered by Scott Frost after a throwing session this morning. There has been consistent mutual interest between the two parties leading up to today's offer.
There was little doubt when the offer was made exactly what would happen. Tonight Mahalak made things official by announcing his commitment.
"It feels awesome, this is just a dream come true for me," Mahalak said of his Oregon commitment. "It's just a huge blessing for me and my family. Coach (Scott) Frost had never seen me throw in person before today so he must have seen what he likes. I threw pretty well even though I am sick and didn't sleep much last night."
Mahalak was one of the few visitors at the Spring game this weekend. There wasn't much doubt prior to the trip, but the game atmosphere at Autzen was a pleasant surprise.
"I had never seen a game before at Autzen and I loved it," he said. "I'd heard about the atmosphere and the fan support and all that, but to experience it was something else. And that was only a Spring game and they had 35,000-plus people there."
There have been some strong comparisons between Mahalak and current Oregon star Marcus Mariota. Both did not start their junior seasons and committed to Oregon before being a full time starter at the high school level.
"Yeah they have talked about that before and compared us in that sense. I know they love how much our character is similar. I know that's something Oregon has mentioned a few times is how much they love my character in addition to my football ability."
Like any true quarterback, Mahalak plans to lead in the recruitment of the 2014 class.
"I'm going to be the biggest recruiter from here on out. I plan to lead the campaign for 'Autzen Army 2014' and get the right guys up to Oregon with me."
