Oregon adds commitment from DL Byers

Rock Hill (S.C.) Northwestern defensive end Roderick Byers has committed to Oregon during a live announcement. At 4:11 PM EST he officially made his verbal commitment to the University of Oregon.

Clemson and South Carolina were his other finalists.

Byers visited Oregon last weekend and had a great visit by all accounts. Oregon head coach Chip Kelly was on hand before the decision today, as we had mentioned on Monday he would be.

There is a twist in this recruitment however.

Although Byers has made his public commitment and signing day is only a week away, if Clemson decides to offer he could switch.

Clemson has not offered Byers a scholarship, however they have always been his dream school. If Clemson loses on a couple of other defensive line prospects, look for things to get tricky.

For now, Oregon has landed a commitment from a 6-foot-3, 265-pound defensive lineman that could easily bulk up to play the defensive tackle position.

Duck fans should keep a sharp eye on the recruitment of Asheville (N.C.) defensive end Jeoffrey Pagan, currently a soft verbal to Clemson. If they manage to keep him, it would likely indicate no offer will be made to Byers.

This is really where the recruiting game gets quite tricky and silly to me. So what happens if Heyward, Simmons and Jackson all want to come to Oregon. Are we able to take all 4?

The whole Clemson being his dream school offering and him switching is my main reason for asking. On the same token, not that our coaches would do this, but based on his possible flip flop could we also tell him, yes you are accepted unless someone else commits before NLI day?

Don't like the conditional commit. Would much rather have him wait and send his letter of intent to Oregon once he knows who he is really commited to. I would not blame the coaches if they did give his scholarship to someone else if the opportunity exists.

As I understand it he has two guys in front of him for an offer from Clemson. Not only is it Paganin front of him, but another guy named Dukes is higher on their board, then Byers. Pagan could pull his commitment and they would go after Dukes before they would offer Byers.

Yeah, I asked my wife to marry me and she said,"well, I'm still kinda waiting on my high school sweetheart to respond on facebook as to whether he wants to get back together and if he isn't interested, I'm also wondering if my prom date from senior year is interested in spending the rest of his life with me, but if you are willing to wait for their answers, then I'll conditionally marry you.' I was so stoked and said sure :)...whatever...Have some self respect Byers...come to Oregon where you are wanted!

I know it's his right to switch, but from CKs past history I'm sure he has done everything on his end to make sure there won't be a switch in a week. Kelly makes these kids visit first and he seems like he really doesn't want a commit unless the recruit means it. I'm guessing CK would have to him if he is having and doubts to just hold off until LOI day, but if he is going to be a duck 100% commit. Just like he told Randal something like "if your engaged, you don't look around or take other girls out."

I agree with you guys, if Byers knows he would switch to Clemson if they offer (which is speculation at this point) he should not have commited. If he switches everyone will say oh whatever but if we were to pull his offer everyone would call us dirty recruiting.
Similar to players not being able to leave a school but a coach can up and leave his players at will. It's not right.
I would hope he wouldn't commit unless he's 100% done.

Yeah same here, if his heart is with another school, then hopefully he ends up there instead.
If they dont offer, then I guess welcome Byers.

This is a solid recruit and it just seems very unlikely for Clemson to offer in the last six days. Could happen, but it doesn't appear likely. Still it's something to watch, and we wanted you to know about it so if anything did happen, it's not like "wow, didn't see that coming at all" type deal.

I know jhop has said that Byers could add 15 lbs get up to 280 and then play DT, but is there any chance that we try to get him to put on 25 and get him to be more a true sized NT? and could he even put on that much weight without it really hurting his athleticism?

We'll just have to see, everyone's body is different. Either way, he's plenty big for Chip Kelly.

Yeah if we keep him at DE I am very happy with his size. I would just like to get some guys that can be that true NT. Even though 290 is still a small NT it seems going in the right direction. I know they are hard to find but maybe we can just create one

I doubt Byers flips also, he has always had UO in his top 3. He has true interest, and I think he is a Duck all the way.
