48 hours ago Cal ripped Oregon’s hearts out with a Justin Cobbs game winning step-back jumper with just 0.7 seconds remaining. Oregon (21-6, 10-4) must quickly get over a game that Oregon players and coaches said hurt and be ready for a stingy Stanford (16-11, 7-7) team that dominated Oregon less than a month ago.
Oregon head coach hopes his team will recover quickly from their 48-46 loss to Cal on Thursday.
“"We played really hard. It was tough way to lose" said senior E.J. Singler following the Cal game Thursday night. "We have to brush this loss off...get back to work and focus on Stanford. That's all you can do.”
Oregon played terrific defense against Cal but it was all for nothing due to Oregon's inability to score on the other end and a failure to convert their free throws. Oregon must quickly figure out their offensive issues or another blowout loss like their 76-52 one to Stanford earlier in the year could happen again.
Last time these two teams played Stanford's Chason Randle scored 17 points, Josh Huestis added 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Dwight Powell added 12 points and 13 rebounds. Aaron Bright also scored 12 points for Stanford who built a 25-point lead early into the second half. In that game Stanford brushed aside their average three-point shooting percentages and made 8-of-14 from three for 57 percent. On the flip side Oregon's offensive struggles were clear as day. The Ducks shot just 34.6 percent from the field and made just 4-of-16 free throw attempts. Oregon also committed 20 turnovers.
Oregon’s confidence is certainly shot once again and the first few minutes of each half will be important for the Ducks. If Oregon can come out and establish any kind of rhythm Oregon’s offensive issues could be thwarted. If they fail to convert early we could certainly see another ugly offensive output.
The status of freshman Dominic Artis is also still unknown and Oregon will continue to play with their lineup to find ways to get junior Johnathan Loyd into successful offensive possessions.
