UO bats explode for 16 hits and win

In the third game of the series between Oregon and Hawaii Oregon's bats came alive to the tune of 16 hits Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium and the Oregon Ducks beat the Rainbows 14-5 and now lead the season opening series 2-1.

Oregon

Junior J.J. Altobelli went 3-for-6 with two RBIs and a double to lead the Ducks. Sophomore Aaron Jones also went 3-for-6 on the afternoon with two RBIs.

The Ducks sent out sophomore pitcher Brando Tessar (1-0) and he tossed six and 2/3 innings allowing just four runs, five hits, and issuing out four walks. Tessar did strike out three Rainbows as well.

The Ducks exploded in the fourth inning as they expanded a 2-0 lead to 10-0 on seven hits and two errors by Hawaii.

Kyle Garlick led the inning off with a single and then capped it off with a two-run home run in his second bat of the fourth inning.

Garlick's home run was the first of the season by any Duck.

Hawaii starter Jon Flinn was given the loss as he allowed seven runs on eight hits Sunday afternoon.

The Rainbows sent out five different pitchers to the mound but it didn't matter who they sent out as Oregon had an answer all game long.

The Ducks recorded four extra-base hits via Altobelli, Scott Heineman, and Shaun Chase, who all doubled.

Oregon will play the final game of a four-game series at Hawaii Monday with first pitch set for 3:05 p.m. PST.

Notes:Oregon’s eight hits in the fourth inning is a new program best…Kyle Garlick’s two-run homer was the first Oregon home run of 2012…Oregon’s 16 hits were the most for the Ducks since totaling 19 vs. Seattle on May 10, 2011…the Ducks’ 14 runs were the most for the program since a 14-3 victory over Portland on April 19, 2011 at PK Park…there were a combined eight hit batters in the game.

      • Last year the Ducks were highly ranked and walked in to Les Murakami Stadium and got beat up pretty bad. I know this year we are picked like 7th or something like that. Is this a good sign that these guys may be better or is Hawaii worse? I know we are 3 games into a long season but I think this is a great start. Hawaii is usually a decent program.

        • I am so out of the loop of the key members of the baseball team. Is there any way we can have a piece on key returning starters and maybe some of the good young guys on this years team? I know we are rated highly but maybe a piece like that would help me follow the team more closely. Thanks!!

            • This is a much better start than last season. Hopefully we can peak earlier in the season this year. I hope to make it down for a couple of games this season.

That is a great idea! Hopefully Justin or Matt see this. Basketball season is winding down and I would welcome the opportunity to cheer on another Duck team. I've never followed baseball too closely in the past.

I am not Justin or Matt but I follow baseball probably more than any other sports.. here are my two cents both positive/negative..

4 Key Returners/Players to watch for the Ducks:

J.J. Altobelli: Junior, batting leadoff, SS, knows how to work the count, great bunter, but does not hit for a high avg. yet, great fielder with above avg. arm strength.

Aaron Jones: Soph, bats 3rd, RF, best swing on team-probably also best all around athlete, very high ceiling kind of kid. Potential to be top draft pick in few years, above avg. arm, needs to learn to stay patient and to hit off speed pitches the other way.

Ryon Healy: Soph, bats cleanup, 1st base, Good power (would be double digit HR guy if played in warm weather), solid contact guy, needs to work on being a first baseman and digging balls out of the dirt. Has frame and potential to be mid round draft pick.

Scott Heineman: True Frosh: bats 5-7, 3rd Base, Pure power guy, quickest bat on team, can turn on inside pitch, young hitter that needs to work the count and just learn college pitching, great arm (SS arm), and great true instincts as a fielder.

I believe that this team is a year away of being very good and being in the upper echelon of the Pac (prob best baseball conference there is this year). I do think though if the young kids step up, and the pitchers pitch like they are capable and improve on control problems, this could very well be a tourney team. Anyway, Go Ducks and looking forward to the spring!! BTW they won 12-6 once again today and took 3 of 4 against the rainbows!!
