A Look at CAL

Yes, they have only given up two rushing td's all year. They are giving up 3.4 yds a carry in conference play. I don't think it will be as rough as last year but as somebody else said LMJ won't be seeing 280 this week. We will have to be able to throw the ball well against Cal.

    Yup.

Your right, he will not see 280 this week! We don't play. banana

    I said 17, not 13.

Well, apparently I can't see well. Not willing to risk my face for 17. Hope you can understand.

  • LMJ likely won't hit 280, but if he can get 150 I'd say we win by 20+ easily.

I'd bet a six pack of beer he hits 125....

  • I agree with others that it is early to be proclaiming the demise of our secondaries. Last Saturday was the first great passing attack we've faced and it revealed that we have lots of room for improvement, just like we saw in earlier games that our rush defense needed some work.

I have confidence that we will pull all the pieces together better with each passing week!

  • Regarding Cal: I hope K Allen, G King, and C Mccain play piss poor (I know Allen is a playmaker but don't know if the other two even play) and hope the crowd is absolutely electric. It would be cool to see Scales be able to make a big play if he gets in there. I hate Cal and hope this game gets lopsided early!

  • With all the boos CAL' s defense is gonna get when they are on the field, and how rowdy Autzen is gonna be Thursday night, for the faking injuries, pussy football CAL played last year, i doubt they will be able to concentrate, and will be confused, and diss oriented... IMO oregon is gonna roll big this game and make another statement!

I'm a Scales fan too. I think he's going to be the next great Duck safety. Boyett had some killer hits against Arizona and almost got a pick twice. I know some have been a little down on our secondary but I think this could be a breakout game for them and we may finally get all those int.'s we've been longing for.

Boyett has been a murderer all season. If there IS a weakness in our secondary, it sure ain't him.

He even accidentally took out Cliffy on a play in the Zona game. lol

I think Brian Jackson, Avery Pattersno and Erick Dargan will have something to say about that...

  • Good analysis with plenty of stats. Here's my intuitve read.

I remember the angst as I drove down to Eugene for the Cal game two years ago. Every stat and our previous performance ( Loss at BSU and two struggling wins) told me we were in for a serious challenge-maybe a loss in Autzen.

Result, as you all must recall with a smile, we ran over, we did everything right and completely hulmiliated them.

    This has that same feel.

I hope you're right. That was the game when Cal was ranked #5 or 6 right? And we won 42-3 or something? That was sweet!

haha. ya. and they scored the first 3

  • I remember when Cal scored the first 3 and we were just happy to hold them to a field goal with Best on the field and all their supposed "playmakers".

Then we scored 42 in a row. I've never seen a receiver so open as Ed Dickson was that game.

  • While we're on the topic of our secondary, is anyone else disappointed with Eddie Pleasant's play since switching from LB? With his size and speed I thought he was going to be Coach Neal's next high draft pick but he is absolutely awful in coverage.

As long as Michael Clay is out, I wouldn't mind seeing Pleasant moved back there and giving Scales, Jackson, and Dargan more of an opportunity back there.

  • This comment has no implication on strategy or match ups between Oregon and California but when looking at College Football in general road teams rarely fair well on Thursday nights. I am not sure what it is about being on the road on Thursday night but road teams never play that well. Not trying to make a blanket statement but seems to be true.

Does CAL have a bye this week as well?

I would like to see him or Brian Jackson get more time. Avery Patterson has been plain bad.

    Yes they do.

Unlike many previous years, they are also the only team to have a bye before facing us. This bye works perfectly for us, it helps negate CALs prep time, we have several injuries to nurse, and it allows the players an extra week to get acclimated to school before having to play a game.

The biggest thing is possibly getting Michael Clay back which would be fantastic.

Disagree. Patterson has been solid in the nickle. Been beaten on a couple plays, but no one is perfect. He's had some nice pass break-ups too.

Pleasant has been weak, but I'm hoping that the Zona game will be like last year when Matthews really turned it on from ASU till the end. Eddie was a lot better this past Saturday, just needs to learn when to cover the flat and when to pick up the slot over the middle and leave the flat to the LB.
