Chris can chime in on this too but when Bennett arrived on campus as a true freshman he looked perfect for the Oregon offense. I can remember watching him throw and thinking "He might not be ready right now (Costa/Thomas battle) but this guy will have the chance to be better than either of these guys once he learns the offense, gets bigger via the weight room, and fixes some minor things".
Still feel that way today. Problem is Mariota appears to be just as good as Bennett. Good problem to have if you are Chip Kelly and Mark Helfrich.

I don't think I've seen a quarterback with as much natural ability as Bryan Bennett in my four years covering the Ducks. In all honesty, aside from the obvious lack of experience and being thin, Bennett had markedly better physical tools than either Darron Thomas or Nate Costa as a true freshman. Like Matt said, I'm not sure that's really changed, it's just that Mariota is very good in his own right. Kelly himself has said publicly that Mariota has been pushing Bennett since arriving as a true freshman last season and I've been told that many on the staff believe Mariota has physical ability and intangibles to be one of the best they've ever coached.
Mariota looked up to the task in the spring game, but it's tough to put too much in to what basically amounts to a glorified exhibition. Expect fall camp to be an absolute battle. Barring injury or some other unforeseen circumstance, whoever emerges as QB1 at the end of August will be very deserving of the job.

Bryan Bennett: "showcased one of the strongest arms in camp"
