Oregon coaches exchanged 400 texts w/ Lyles the past four years

  • That is the crux of it. The need to ask that and the continued talking in circles, as to what is and is not relevant, explains much. As this is lost in the ether for some, makes it clear that this is, but a waste of time!

Probae esti in segetem sunt deteriorem datae fruges, tamen ipsae suaptae enitent

  • this past cell phone bill i had over 4,000 txts,, so 400 in 4 years, aint nothing lmao... this just makes me laugh!!!!!

Also, I have a friend in the compliance office at U of U. When this story broke a few months ago, we talked and he told me that the NCAA needs viable evidence to sanction a program. Either by documentation, personal statement, or confession. If they decide to penalize a program on a hunch or rumor then they risk a law suit by that program. And without evidence the program would win.

It's clear now that the NCAA doesn't need actual proof to levy sanctions. In the USC case, they decided Todd McNair (USC assistant coach) knew or should have known about Bush's violations based on a 2 min 30 sec phone call from Lake to McNair. They never even questioned McNair about the correct date of the call (when talking to him they said the call took place a year after it really did). And when talking to Lake, he claimed it was McNair who called him, even though the records showed it was Lake who called McNair. Additionally, the NCAA classified Lake as a booster to USC despite his only connection being paying Bush to leave the university.

So unless Oregon can produce a whole bunch of videos from 2011 recruits across the country provided to them by Lyles, the NCAA has all they need to sanction Oregon. I'm not saying the NCAA would be right in doing so, I'm just saying they could if they wanted.

"Oregon hasn't signed any recruits from Florida dating back to at least 2008."

except for Isaac Dixon who signed in 2010. nice try though. 400 texts is about 8 a month for 4 years. that's a blip on the radar screen.

So then isn't it a bit suspicious that there were 12 texts between Chip and Lyles the 2 days before LaMichael James committed to Oregon?

  • how is that suspicious? my guess is that there are that many texts between the coach of any recruit and a HS coach. the HS coach for LMJ said Oregon was on the up and up. he was quoted over 2 months ago. again, nice try.

I'm sorry but I'll trust a compliance officer who's worker with the NCAA for 10+ years. I don't know enough about the USC situation but I would believe that there's more to that story, and that there's viable evidence that the NCAA had against USC. I also find it pathetic that you get jollies posting stories like this on someone else's board, like we didn't already know. Then you make a comment like "I just want to let you guys know whats happening," which you've said in the past. But it's a free country so enjoy what makes you happy!

So then isn't it a bit suspicious that there were 12 texts between Chip and Lyles the 2 days before LaMichael James committed to Oregon?

Not really...I can think up a million different scenarios for how the conversation might have gone. Here's just one example:

Chip: "Hey Willie. Just wondering if you've spoken to or heard any thing new from LaMichael lately?"

Lyles: "Not much...he's been laying low. Talking options over with his coaches and family. Could be making a decision in the next few days"

    Chip: "Ok thanks."

    Lyles "No problem."

    Next Day...

Chip: "One other thing...we're interested in another young RB, Tra Carson (teammate of James). Just want to get a sense of how he's looking. Have any film/info on him yet?" (This actually counts as 2 texts...over the 140 character limit)

Lyles: "Right...the young freshman. Seems a little raw right now, but showing great potential. Nothing in the database yet, but I'll see if I can pull something together for you." (Another 2 texts)

Chip: "That would be great. We gotta start looking at these guys when their young and see how they develop. Thanks Willie."

Lyles: "Again, no problem. I'll get going on the Carson info/tape in the next week."

Chip: "Sounds good. We'll be in touch in the next week or so."

    Lyles: "Ok...talk to you soon."

And there ya have it. 12 texts over two days...nothing incriminating or nefarious. Simply just asking about info... Or like I said, it could be any number of other conversations that had absolutely nothing to do with James.

Seriously...you're trying to make the implication that 12 texts (that just happened to be a couple days before James committed) could be nothing other than some under the table dealings. Without content and context, 12 texts don't mean jack.

I agree, there are many different scenarios where the texts would be fine. But the NCAA will see it as something suspicious (rightly or wrongly) and go digging. If everything is on the up and up, Oregon will be fine. If the NCAA finds things to be fishy, Oregon will be in trouble.

Just to clear something up. The NCAA is not investigating Oregon at this time. Not saying they wont but they have had this info for several months and have yet to even inform Oregon of an imminent investigation. Everyone is getting a little ahead of themselves because of the media feeding frenzy the last couple of days.

What constitutes the starting point for an NCAA investigation? I know the NCAA emailed Oregon in March asking them to provide numerous pieces of documentation, including recruiting videos, profiles, invoices, billing statements, emails, phone logs, bank records, etc. It probably takes a good deal of time for Oregon to produce everything requested and for the NCAA to go through it all.

Does the NCAA issue something in writing that notifies the school they are being investigated?

That's pretty much it. If the NCAA deems there's a problem or that Oregon is lying to them then they will do what they want. There is only speculation and no proof, but if they dig deep and long enough they will find something to point at.

  • Apparently John Canzano was just on a radio show and said there's a 50-50 chance of Chip being Oregon's coach next year because of the issues currently happening.

It's John Canzono, he is the king of sensationalist crap. Chip will be our coach next year, and for the foreseeable future..

Yes, that was on KJR up in Washington too. What I would like to know 6DyNasTy6 is why you have such a morbid fascination with the Ducks. Everytime something on Lyles surfaces you are the first to post it to our forums and stir the pot. Granted you aren't the usual self-absorbed, delusional SC fan, but the question begs: Is it misery loves company, envy or the PAC 12 brotherhood that leads you to share information with your brothers from the North?

Also, it is worth noting, since 6dynasty seems to have such a fascination with Will Lyles, that Andy Staples, from SI.com said that many other schools used Lyles, including.........................................wait,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,wait for it.......................................................USC!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I maybe talk to Jhop 2 times a week and we have probably texted each other 400 times in the last 2-3 months just setting up man hour. It doesn't take much to send a dozen text figuring out what place to get a good beer at. Speaking of which it's 96 out here in Medford and I need a beer.cheers

Don't delay! I remember going to a bar down the street from the Red Lion I was staying at when I was working there. Shenanigans maybe. I think there was a strip club next door???

Ohh for crying out loud! You've lowered yourself down to using Clownzano as a source?!? At one point you were a respectable poster (I recall the DAT situation) what happened?

And when did the Clown get hired to be our AD because that's really the only person who could tell us Chip's future with our team....Without completely speculating of course.

  • While I kind of respect what you're doing dynasty, you're no better than a preacher using fear tactics to motivate followers to believe your vantage point. Yes, if all that you are arguing is that Oregon has put a situation in play that is a bit mysterious to us, then yes. You are completely right. By my thing is that you've been coming over to our board since the beginning trying to put on a very non-committal, aloof emotion into your messages. Of course you know even the insinuation that we would get slammed by the NCAA isn't going to sit well over here. We read all the reports you do. We are tracking the situation. We don't need you to be our mind's eye tracking the situation.

If the NCAA come down, we'll deal with our situation. I personally don't find that to be true and you trying to to start some half reported story about the winningest coach during his first two seasons at Oregon history -- not being here? You're losing my respect. Let's talk about prospects and the current college football climate. I believe a poster hit the nail on the head earlier. I didn't go over to the SC board and relish in your ruling. I still think a healthy USC is good for the Pac-12. I want to rule this conference with SC operating at their fullest.

So please don't insult our intelligence with your trite, half-hearted inquiries into our program.

Yep Shenanigans is actually where we went for the last man hour. They've expanded and they have like 4 bars connected now. Cool deal.

And yes the next door business is "The Office" downtown Medford. Classy joint.

All I know about John Canzano is he writes for a paper in Oregon. I figured he had some knowledge about what was taking place and simply reported what he said.

Yeah he's kinda sensational, unlike Robinson and Cole, who backed up their USC story with facts and numbers such as:

$54,000 in rent-free living for a year at Michaels' $757,500
$28,000 from Michaels to help Bush's family settle pre-existing debt
$1,574.86 for a stay by Bush at the Manchester Hyatt
    $250.65 for limousine transportation
$595.20 in round-trip airfare from San Diego
$623.63 for a hotel stay by Bush at the Venetian Resort & Casino in Las Vegas

"Sources confirmed representatives of New Era were allowed into the USC locker room during the 2005 season. Ornstein and other agents frequented the USC sidelines during several games and numerous practices that season, according to published reports."

Kinda shows total lack of institutional control doesn't it?

I'll take 400 anoymous text messages over that paper trail anyday.

Most football fans in oregon would agree Canzano is a duck hater

  • Duck Nasty

I usually don't agree with much of the mean comments regarding Oregonlive writers but the ones I am reading on here regarding douchezano are dead on. I really don't care for the guy. I do like Ken Goe and John Hunt though. Some people were pretty brutal to Ken when he started doing video segments on the Ducks as they were on their undefeated run. Common theme was Ken "you have a face for radio". I felt bad for him at the same time I was laughing........
