Damn coaches

  • But [the athlete] wasn't sure that Oregon wanted him. Where is [the UO coach], he wondered. [The coach], of course, was at home sitting on top of his mountain just outside of Eugene, and waiting for [the athlete] to come to him. [The coach] recruits no one, at least not in the usual sense of the word. He considers it immoral.

"Oh, I recruit," he says, "but I don't go out and make love to some kid. We're not in the business of making deals with a kid. We are offering him a chance for a good college education, and if I'm talking to a kid who has a chance for a better education someplace else, I tell him to go."

Which is something that has not endeared [the coach] to the most fanatic of Oregon fans, although the first one has yet dared to voice an objection to his face.

[The coach's] firmness of purpose has cost him innumerable talented athletes who would have come to Oregon on hands and knees if he had but beckoned. "Everybody knows about the University of Oregon," he says. "If some kid wants to come here all he has to do is write a letter. If he doesn't want to write, he can't be very interested."

[The athlete] was interested, and hurt. "I thought it very strange and I was a little angry," he says. "I'd get a letter from [the coach] only about once a month, and schools like Villanova were writing me every day. I'd get tons of mail. It'd take me an hour and a half at night to read it all. But I knew deep in my heart I wanted to go to Oregon, only Oregon. Then one day I got a very special letter from [the coach]. It blew my mind. Just two paragraphs. It said something like if I want to go to Oregon, under his guidance and supervision, there was no doubt in his mind that I'd be the greatest in the world."

Okay, by now you've probably guessed the coach and the athlete. Bowerman and Pre. But I've heard Chip really digs guys like Bowerman and doesn't like the kiss-ass portion of recruiting. Which isn't to say times haven't changed, but if I was a kid wondering why I haven't gotten a call from the Duck coaches, I'd call them and ask them, straight-up "What do I have to do for you to let me be a Duck?". Well, okay, maybe at 17 I would have my HS coach do it for me. :) But I sure would let them know I was interested and selling myself. If the coaches really want players who want to be Ducks, you gotta let them know, right?

Cool story and I think it has some relevance, but keep in mind the UO men's track and field squads had won 3 national championships within an 8 year span prior to Pre's enrollmen at the UO. While Oregon football is extremely strong and nationally relevant right now, the difference between our TF/CC teams and our football team is light years. Oregon TF is similar to Alabama, USC, Notre Dame, Ohio State football in regards to history and tradition. That is a big difference IMHO...

  • Really neat story. I think it helps put the hand wringing in perspective.

  • I think the Oregon coaches are a little bit like that. There’s a lot of coaches out there that kiss a recruits ass all day, every day. Tosh, (what a 100+ love letters in one day), is absolutely is one, Orgeron’s another kiss butt type coach. A lot of kids see through that and others need it. Chip and the rest of the Oregon coaches I don’t believe do much if any of it. And I especially don’t ever see Coach Azz doing any of that. I see coach Azz as just a here’s what it is, here’s what we can do, and here’s how we can do it type, take it or leave it. There is no ass kissin with coach Azz, period. Maybe that’s a good thing, maybe it can sometimes be bad thing. It just is what it is.

  • On the flip side, we aren't being held hostage by a number, next to a name. I don't think we will ever have a Nkemdiche type issue.
