Darron Thomas 'doubtful' for Colorado game

  • One of my top sources confirmed Thomas is doubtful with regards to his chances for playing this weekend at Colorado. Injury similar to LaMichael in terms of just needing time to heal, it doesn't sound long term. I'll continue to dig, but for now plan on seeing Bennett running the offense this weekend.

Keep in mind, the fact they are playing Colorado, not Stanford is a factor.

  • I have no issues with this after seeing Bennett last week. I am actually excited to see him get a chance to throw 15-20 times. My question is if Oregon is running it up on Colorado then do we leave Bennett in the whole game or does Haines get some time at QB to preserve Mariota's RS? I hate to sound overconfident but Colorado is hurting big time. Their 2 best offensive weapons are out for the game and even with those guys it looked like a 4-5 TD spread. Speaking of spreads, anyone know what it is right now?

  • Does this mean that he will dress? Would they take a redshirt off of Mariota if God-forbid something happened to Bennett? I am guessing that they will probably not need DT, but I feel that it is important to have him ready just in case.

  • I have extreme concerns about this. Bennett, from what I've seen, has not been that consistent throwing the ball in games. I've heard that he has good accuracy and a great arm in practice, but that doesn't always translate. In the ASU game he had a pass he skipped off the ground to a wide open Barner, he threw a near pick in the redzone that was intended for Huff, and if not for Hoffman coming back to the ball on that the other pass in the redzone that might have been picked as well.

Now no one needs to tell me that he was a freshman QB coming off the bench cold, that's obvious. I believe that a QB needs to be able to run the read option in this offense so he already looked good at doing that, but for this offense to be as dynamic as possible, we need to have the threat of the pass.

Good thing we're playing Colorado though and hopefully Thomas doesn't miss any more time.

  • I'm guessing Bennett will play the whole game even if it gets out of hand. DT was able to manage by himself last year after Costa went down.

No need to burn Mariota's redshirt.

  • I say let Bryan start with the added pressure of being a starter. It will be good experience, and honestly everyone else on the team will be able to carry the team if he can't.

  • I look at it as we are getting quality snaps for our back-up which we all know is extrememly important if we want to finish this season at the top. It is nice to be able to bench DT in games that are in the bag earlier than usual because we have a more than capable back up. I think Bennett is going to blow some people away against Colorado, that being said it is Colorado which has a horrific defense and an offense that might be much worse than say....the Beavers? Stewart and Richardson are by far the two best skilled players on that team and they are both out for the Oregon game. This could be like the Missouri State game.

Welcome EpochX. Ya, I'd be a lot more concerned if it wasn't against Colorado. Could see Bennett make some huge strides in passing this week as he should be taking reps with the 1s all week and completely ready to go when the game starts.

I can live with 'near' and 'might,' off the bench.

That's true. I will also say though, I didn't like what I saw from him in the spring game and in the cleanup job against Nevada.

Trust me though, I'd love nothing more than for him to be an absolute monster.

There's definitely a reason DT is the starter and Bennett isn't. The two strong points for Bennett is he's at least a redshirt frosh, not a true frosh. Secondly he's got wheels, so they can cater to that strength and lastly Colorado won't have film to prepare for him from, well not much anyways outside of a half against ASU.

Even if Mariotta wasn't red shirting I would feel much more comfortable with daryle hawkins running the qb then Haines or Mariotta. More experience in this offense.

He'll be fine, keep in mind he's a freshman, and will most likely be our starter as a junior, w 4 years of chip's scheme under his belt.

Oh I know that, I'm mostly a glass is half full kind of guy. So no worries.

    EpochX

  • Lets also remember their best defender is out as well and will be starting a true frosh in his place at ILB... Game is in the bag, a 33 point spread might not have been.

Good points, but I don't think he has had quality minutes working with the '1's prior to now. I expect his passing will improve when Tuinei, Huff, De'Anthony, Hoffman, Barner, Vaughn & Paulson are on the receiving end of his passes.

  • My gut tells me that DT will travel and dress down with the team. No way we ruin Mariota's RS if BB gets banged up for a play or two. Put two braces on and hand the ball off or pass.

    Yup.

Bennett should be fine. Chip isn't gonna restrict the hell out of him. You still have to win the game.

  • I look for Bennett & Co. to stretch the field early and take adavntage of some of his first-start energy. Maybe a little bootleg after an option look or two. I think he'll have the whole playbook at his disposal and his speed in space will be what Colorado sees on tape so they will defend us thickly at the line. They haven't seen how he tosses the ball. If he can be accurate and nimble early, the running game opens up, the seam routes for Paulson open up and the Ducks assert their will in the Rockies. • Or how about a little wild-duck action with Huff or Hawkins? For a couple of plays that'd be an interesting experiment against Colorado.
