ESPN the Mag: "We Smoked it All"

  • An article was released a couple of hours ago delving into the use of weed by U of O football players, the use marijuana across NCAA campuses and the changing mores regarding pot use in greater society.

  • Man talk about drudging up old news, this is some groundbreaking journalism. 60% or more of the players on EVERY college team smoke weed. It's not just Oregon. ESPN just wanted to write another anti-West inflammatory article using the Cliffy quote I see.

The whole idea of lumping weed in with a "drug culture" is stupid. I'd rather they be smoking weed every day than getting piss drunk, involved with gangs or becoming junkies, you know, things that can actually KILL YOU, but...that's just me. I'm not a big pot fan, but if you think it's anywhere close to as harmful as alcohol, pills or gang activity, open your eyes.

  • It's now on ESPN's main page. Look for the Oregonlive follow up article about the article after the fact, lol.

  • I think this could be a positive article in terms of a recruiting tool for them boys in the south, especially Florida. My college buddy from New Orleans chose to come to Oregon for the dank weed. Just sayin...

  • Of course it happens at Oregon, but like it said its not a one school issue its a national issue. Its hard for me to condemn it because I am a libertarian on the issue but I truly don't use it. I mean you could claim that Harris excessive speeding was cause by being high but I would have to rule out the idea that he would have done the same thing perfectly sober as a young guy. If Kelly has cracked down and that his rules great, but I'm not going to condemn personal use, the players just have to realize the "its a privilege" mentality Kelly has and make the choice accordingly.

    Best post EVER.

And anyway I thought the article was actually good for Oregon. The comments about Kelly were EXTREMELY positive.

  • This, to me, is the key quote:

"The smoking Duck appears to be coming down from his high, and he's hungry. He says he'll probably order in, play NBA 2K11 on the Xbox 360 and call it a night. "Some guys drink beer," he says. "They'll get drunk, act crazy, get in trouble. I don't like beer. I like to chill and smoke weed."

The way I see it, if a kid is at home, he had a good day at practice, he's got all his shit done (homework, errands) and he's just relaxing at home, then he can spark a spliff if he damn well pleases.

    Exactly.

ESPN is barking up the wrong tree if they think this is some kind of problem. You want a real drug problem and culture in Oregon, do an article on meth usage. I'm glad nobody on the team touches that trash.

Agreed. The article really didn't bring anything new to light. But it also wasn't just a bash Oregon piece. I really had no problem with the article. Except Reuben Droughns' comment about girls with hairy armpits. Reuben is not helping the recruiting effort!

Again, my thoughts exactly. The whole hippie thing is blown way out of proportion.

That's probably a stretch. As much as some players might see it as positive, I'm guessing more parents might be upset about it. I doubt this article will have any real impact, but it never helps to have one more thing that some parents could look to as a negative. If there's one thing I've learned on DT it's that parents seem to always hold enormous sway.

Yeah you may be right. Just trying my best to make lemonade out of this whole thing.

  • I was holding out hope that we would go undefeated last year and win the Natty. Cliff's now infamous quote of "We smoked it all" could then be turned into a great shirt idea of "We smoked them all"

Well there is always this year!

  • I'm a bit surprised by how openly a player would talk to a reporter about it; it makes me wonder what the context/pretext was regarding the interview. Moreover, I think the real story here will be in how Chip responds. Does this give him further latitude regarding testing? Will he do some thorough digging? He almost has to for public appearance sake... then again, it's Chip.crackwhip

I guess I'm most curious to see what the fallout is within in the team in terms of policy and also with how they respond to being branded.
