GameDay Blog: Oregon at Cal

Follow along tonight and provide your own views of the Oregon vs Cal football game tonight.

    *Pre Game
    - @DuckFootball
Heimuli is just standing by and watching the other defensive linemen get loose.
    - @DuckFootball
Alex Balducci indeed among the defensive linemen down there loosening up. We'll see if the redshirt actually comes off tonight.
    -@DuckFootball
Koa Ka'ai, a redshirt on the D line last year who moved to tight end this fall and missed the last two games, is warming up with the D
    - @cthansen2001
Pretty sure I just saw Dion Jordan at the UO men's basketball game. Didn't make the trip to Cal, obviously.
    -@Duckfootball
Looks like the Ducks brought redshirting freshman safety Reggie Daniels on this trip. No reason that I know of to actually use him.
    - @QuackCave: Tonight's Oregon uniform: Green helmet, white jersey w/iridescent wings, black pants
-@Duckfootball 5 p.m. on ABC then RT @TMcD_ pretty sure I just heard musberger say @KirkHerbstreit will call Stanford #Ducks game next week.
    - @DuckFootball
Travel squad changes: IN: Koa Ka'ai, David Kafovalu, Ryan Hagen, Alex Balducci, Reggie Daniels. Out: Hill, Mathis, Lockie, Keliikipi, Allen.
    -@DuckFootball
Safeties Avery Patterson and Erick Dargan are warming up at cornerback, where listed backups Troy Hill and Dior Mathis have been previously.
    -@DuckFootball
Starting D line: Armstead, Hart, Buckner. Washington at OLB in place of Jordan.
    -@DuckFootball
No. 2 D line: Kafovalu, Balducci, Kamp. French at OLB.

    *1st quarter

    - Oregon kicks off and the Ducks kick off. Hart, Buckner, AA, Washington the DL. HART gets a sack on third down.
    - The punt hits an Oregon Duck in the leg but Keanon Lowe recovers it before anyone on Cal could grab it. The Ducks then come out swinging in the passing game with Mariota hitting Josh Huff twice and then a few plays later finding Huff for a big gain. Mariota a few plays later finds Colt Lyerala across the end zone for a wide open touchdown. Ducks run a two-point fake but Ryan Clanton is called for a hold and Ducks kick a PAT. 7-0.
    - During Cal's second drive freshman Alex Balducci hits the field and redshirt is now lifted off.
    - Cal marches down the field and scores on a Bridgeford pass to Powe in the back of the end zone to tie the game. Earlier in the drive Taylor Hart leaves the field and is gets treatment from Oregon's trainers after getting chop blocked. 7-7 in the first quarter.
    - Oregon goes three and out and Jackson Rice punts for the firs time tonight. Cal will take over at their own 37 yard line.
    - Cal goes three and out and Oregon forces a punt.
    - Oregon starts driving and there is some talking and pushing after a third down hit on Keanon Lowe. Lowe was hit in the head and a flag was called to give the Ducks a first down. A few plays later Mariota scrambles for a first down and then gets a first down. On another third down inside Cal's 10 Barner gets it on some tough sledding but comes quickly out of the game in serious pain with maybe a wrist injury. Looks really bad. Next play Oregon goes to Byron Marshall for a touchdown and the Ducks now lead 14-7 with 1:41 left in the first.
    -@DuckFootball
Team surgeon is looking at Barner's wrist. It's really bothering him.
    - Barner goes to the locker room and now Avery Patterson hurts his knee on a big play by Cal's running game. Patterson appears to be done for the night most likely.
    - End of the first quarter with Cal driving 14-7.

    2nd Quarteres
    - Cal continues to drive down the field but is stopped by Oregon's mash unit of a defense. Cal kicks a field goal and now trails Oregon 14-10. Big stand for Oregon's defense.
    - Barner returns to the sideline and then the game but Oregon goes three and out and is forced to punt the ball. If the Ducks can't establish the run game soon this could get dicey.
    - Oregon comes back out on defense with a defensive line of: David Kafovalu, Alex Balducci, Sam Kamp and Christian French. The Ducks however force another three and out. Big chance for Oregon O to put together a big drive.
-TV shows Barner getting a serious tape job done on his thumb.
    - Mariota hits Colt Lyerla for a huge gain and then follows it up with a first down scramble. After getting up from his run Mariota quickly runs off the field with a shoulder injury and Bryan Bennett replaces him. The Ducks get three tries inside the 10 but fail to score a touchdown and are forced to kick a field goal. Ducks make it and they now lead 17-10 with 6:24 left in the half.
-Koa Ka'ai now in at defensive end for this series for Oregon's defense.
    - Oregon forces Cal to kick a 48-yard field goal and they miss.
    - Marcus Mariota returns to the game and completes his first pass attempt.
-Touchdown Oregon. Mariota finds Josh Huff after checking what seemed like every other option. No rush by Cal either. 24-10 Oregon.
-Oregon goes into the half up 24-10.

    Third Quarter

-Oregon returns the kickoff 60 yards via Keanon Lowe but then the Oregon Ducks offense stalls out the next four plays and Oregon turns it over on downs.
    - @DuckFootball
Taylor Hart is in sweats on the sideline, a boot on his left foot. Oregon is now without all four of its regular starter on the D line.
    - Cal just marches right down field with little resistance from Oregon's depleted defensive line and scores a touchdown. 24-17 Oregon early in the third quarter.
    -@DuckFootball
Tyson Coleman and Christian French are in at OLB. So all three linemen plus the outside linebackers are freshmen.
    - With literally no defensive line Cal decides to throw it on first down and Ifo breaks up the pass. On second down Cal is stopped for a two yard gain and is facing a long third. Arik Armstead forces Bridgeford to hurry a screen pass and Bo Lokombo grabs an INT for the Ducks. Next play Mariota hits Huff for a touchdown, Huff's second of the game, and Oregon now leads 31-10.
    - Oregon sets a record of 23 straight games of 30 or more points at the FBS level.
    - Oregon forces another Cal turnover of downs after Cal goes back to throwing the ball.
    - A few players later Oregon's Mariota finds Josh Huff again for Huff's third touchdown catch to make it 28-17. Josh Huff now over 100 yards receiving with 109 yards on five catches and three touchdowns tonight.
    - End of the first quarter and the Ducks lead 38-17 and the Ducks are also driving.

    4th Quarter

    - On the first play of scrimmage in the 4th quarter Marcus Mariota finds Colt Lyeral in the flat and Lyerla takes it into the end zone for his second touchdown catch and Mariota's 5th touchdown pass. 45-17 Oregon.
-@ESPNStatsInfo: Oregon has now scored 40+ points in 13 straight games, a new FBS record, previously held by Texas (2005-06).
    - Cal forced to start throwing the ball early in the 4th is picked off by Brian Jackson who takes it to Cal's 25-yard line.
    -@mgwalks
Oregon has two 100 yard receivers (DAT and Huff) for the first time since 2007. First time under Chip Kelly
    - Mariota throws his 6th touchdown pass of the night to Will Murphy. Oregon now leads 52-17 mid-way into the fourth quarter.
    - Cal throws out a reverse to Chris Harper but Tyson Coleman gets him for a big loss and Cal is forced to punt two plays later.
    - Bryan Bennett replaces Mariota at quarterback and leads Oregon to a 12 play, 5 minute drive that ends in a touchdown pass on third down from Bennett to B.J. Kelley. 59-17 Oregon with 3:46 left in the game.
    - That will do it for Oregon. The Ducks improve to 10-0 after beating Cal 59-17. Heck of a performance from Oregon's youth/depth.

Although it was Oregon v. Stanford or some other game, so maybe ESPN can pick it up instead or something.

  • Cal isn't very good but I am still very concerned about the injuries on the two deep on defense. Scary regardless of opponent.

I'm definitely a little worried. With their QB concerns, Cal is going to have to pound the rock and an inexperienced D-Line could help them out a bit. Memorial Stadium has been a nightmare in the past, but this offense is a well-oiled death machine so I'd be surprised if its too close at half.

The thing about Cal is that defensively their scheme revolved around disrupting things up front and manning up on the outside. Mariota's ability as a runner and as passer makes that a much more difficulty thing to do and if they do the same thing schematically I think MM will burn them on it and the offense will have a big game. But with the issues on defense they have got to be sharp. Stay on schedule, no penalties. protect the ball, all that.

  • I can't vent to my wife or friends because they just don't understand but I'm missing the game so we can attend one of our friends kids birthday party.

I hope they have TV's at this pizza joint.

With the injuries, Bama losing and the emotional high we had last week this game is a ready made trap game. I'm very interested to see how we respond to this adversity. With the character of this team I don't see them overlooking Cal. This is Cal's biggest game of the year.

As far as I know he's dressed but not playing (like Huff, Clay, and Alonso have a certain points this year).

  • Not an inspiring defense effort on the first drive. I am sure we will make adjustments though.

    Canaduck

  • Dare I say our DB's need to be less physical? We are letting them march down the field when they have a very capable QB willing to throw some INT's......
