I wonder how much Chip cares about this

  • I'm guessing the answer is SMALLER THAN NONE. I understand the obligation of a coach to interact with the fanbase and financial supporters, but Chip has given us the most successful and wildly popular era in our program's history so these boosters need to shut up and enjoy it.

This whole lame story just deserves a #richpeopleproblems tag.

Chip Kelly’s Secret Offense: Why University of Oregon boosters are annoyed with their most successful football coach

When the Oregon Ducks plucked a little-known offensive coordinator named Chip Kelly out the University of New Hampshire in 2007, the tectonic plates of college football shifted toward the Willamette Valley.

And if that's all he cares about, that's fine by me.

  • I agree with both of you. With being said, I can tell you that their is number of former Duck players that feel the same as the tone of this article. As an example, it is my understanding that Chip does not allow us to even attend practice. It is believed he treats former players that played for MB and RB differently....as in not as welcoming. During the Cliff Harris issue(s) I know a lot of former players (whom have a similar background as Cliff) wanted to reach out to Cliff and wanted Chip's blessings/permission.....but request fell on def ears. I can assure that their is a contingency of former players that will not be sad if/when Chip leaves.

Again....I agree with both you (Jhop & MBG). We (former duck players) debate this topic on a weekly basis. I'm of the belief, as long as Chip is winning the correct way, I'm OK if he does not have the personality that MB does. I also believe that program is bigger than Chip.

I would venture to say that UO's biggest booster PK, is quite pleased.

More importantly: I am quite pleased. Keep winning games, Chip, and keep bringing in quality kids. Let boosters and the media adjust to you!

  • Lots of good posts in this thread. Definitely a slippery slope.

  • This makes me sick. Just because you donate money doesn't mean he needs to act like you are above him. These boosters would rather go back to the 70's when we lost 63-13 to [insert team here] then have a real coach.

It's pathetic and it seems this school doesn't deserve Chip.

TBH the SEC doesn't allow practices either. We are tired of the SEC? Then start acting like best. Just because you donate money doesn't mean Chip needs to hand over his game plan to you.

  • I'm guessing these idiotic boosters donate to the U of O athletic department in order to feel important. When Chip doesn't find schmoozing with them to be very important, they get their feelings hurt. It amazes me that these boosters would rather have a buddy than a great football coach. These boosters should seriously reconsider their feeling toward the Chip Kelly era, because you can never be certain about the future of a football program.

Why are we turning this into a class problem. A lot of the boosters have been around for a long time and were accustomed to some access to the coach. Remember that they don't have to donate that much, but choose to do it because they love the school.

I'm not saying chip needs to share anything with them or anyone. At the same time the position has a certain amount of glad handing involved with it. Does Obama have to kiss babies and go to rich influential people's dinner parties? No, he has way more important issues he could be working on. That being said, you have to play the game and he wouldn't be there if it wasn't for them. Same could be said for chip.

Chip has brought in more money, more branding and more success than anyone ever has before to this program. He came to a program that had no winning tradition besides in the past 8-10 years and turned it into a perennial Top 5 program where the fans expect a national title every year.

The boosters should honestly be licking his boots, not the other way around. They don't deserve a coach like him. But Uncle Phil recognizes what Chip has done and he's happy, and that's the booster who really matters.

  • A few things stood out to me in this article.
    1. A kid from NC convinced his pops to take him to a game! Anyone care to venture a guess on the cost? 2k? He bought a "O" sticker and rocks it on his jeep-baller! I went to school in NC for a couple of years and kids got custom paint jobs on the tailgates of their trucks with Tar Heels, roll tide, blue devils, and State, but never anything north of the Mason-Dixon Line let alone from another world like Oregon. Kids been running our system for three years now with another one coming up. Will he Quack?

    2. The boosters with a gripe won't go public, cowards!

    3. The hoodie is incorporating some of our system to the tune of shortest time between plays, highest passing yards per game and passing play.

    The legend of Kelly grows!

  • If you are a booster why did you keep your name from being printed....hmm....

  • Chip brought more money in, but a lot of these boosters kept the program afloat back when we sucked. Having a weekly lunch is not too much to ask.

They love the school. That is why they want the best coach in the country to leave their loved school. Oh wait...

  • Rich people need to stop comaining when they don't get their way. Maybe they should complain about people standing and yelling

    ralfn8tr20

  • I guess instead of voicing their displeasure they should just go away quietly? Maybe they should stop donating extra and just become regular fans. That's a good idea.

I don't have an issue with chip. He is an amazing coach when it comes to X's and O's. However I can see how a little bit of social awareness on his part would go a long way.

Yes. If you don't want to donate the money without getting beni's then don't. Simple as a zipper.

  • Should we apply the same logic to Phil? Or is he in a separate class that should be treated differently? If so, how do you define this wealth/donation class? Is he alone or will others also get that treatment?

  • Chip has been a winner while at Oregon. He has made many fans and players love Oregon football more than ever before. That said I can see the boosters point of view. I think soon a lot of us may be just a tiny bit annoyed with CK when he leaves for the NFL.

How in the hell are you comparing a reaction to how Chip treats one miffed booster to a possible reaction that fans could have if he leaves for the NFL? How is that related at all?
