I wonder how much Chip cares about this

  • Personally there is no right or wrong on this issue to me. However I wish that instead of going to the media, these boosters would have simply made their cases with either their territory rep from Oregon or anyone within the AD. These people are not hard to reach, especially for those who donate generously.

This shouldn't be a story blown up via media IMO but what do I know. By Friday everyone will have forgotten about this story and moved on.

Why are we turning this into a class problem. A lot of the boosters have been around for a long time and were accustomed to some access to the coach. Remember that they don't have to donate that much, but choose to do it because they love the school.

I'm not saying chip needs to share anything with them or anyone. At the same time the position has a certain amount of glad handing involved with it. Does Obama have to kiss babies and go to rich influential people's dinner parties? No, he has way more important issues he could be working on. That being said, you have to play the game and he wouldn't be there if it wasn't for them. Same could be said for chip.

Does a booster donate to help the school and athletic department, or is it to become buddies with Chip Kelly? It should be the former, but these boosters seem to believe they are entitled to Chip Kelly's time. Shouldn't the results on the field be enough for the boosters? As for what they were accustomed to, it seems like the wins on the field should be a pretty good trade-off. We could have hired an awe schucks type of coach, but we have a guy that likes to control every aspect of his time and of the program.

Hell, isn't it the athletic director's job to schmooze with the boosters? Maybe Chip should do more, but I will never understand the sentiment that some boosters would prefer a different coach because he isn't out there "playing the game." As for the Obama reference, politics are a completely different animal than being a head coach. Chip isn't running for office every 4 years and trying to procure donations to fund a re-election campaign. Chip is letting the 4 straight BCS appearances do the talking, and that is enough for me.

Chip brought more money in, but a lot of these boosters kept the program afloat back when we sucked. Having a weekly lunch is not too much to ask.

There are only so many hours in a day, Chip telecommuting with boosters adds up to shear brilliance in my mind!
Why should he take valuable time commuting when he could be coaching and recruiting? Just to stroke the egos of boosters?
    C'mon man!

  • Oh no! Willamette Week! This is huge. All hands on deck! Oh wait, Willamette Week? Weekly teleconference with egotistical rich guys now cut to 30 minutes.

  • “It was amazing, like a trip to the mecca of college football,” says Bussian, who slapped an Oregon sticker on the back window of his Jeep Grand Cherokee when he returned home.lol

He sure sounds like the life of the party. Doesn't sound like he's a college coach to the core if he hates certain critical aspects of the job.

Before Carolina recently got hot, I had him coaching Cam next year. Looks like he'll be somewhere other than UO before too long, though.

Should we apply the same logic to Phil? Or is he in a separate class that should be treated differently? If so, how do you define this wealth/donation class? Is he alone or will others also get that treatment?

I think if you build half the campus, the cass, Matt Knight arena, the student athlete center, and the new coaches building then you should get a little bit better treatment than the other boosters-you?

  • I think we can all agree that a booster complaining about this is ridiculous BUT on the flip side boosters are the life blood part of college/university's and shouldn't be neglected because whether the booster is large or small the schools need them for present and future. Sure we can agree the this booster and others like him clearly need more attention is their lives BUT our coach has a responsibility to make himself available and not just via a teleconference. Now I'm not saying he needs to be MB or RB but he does need to make more of an effort because its a major part of his job and the school can't afford to lose these donors. Of course the boosters have to decide what they want to win or a glad-handing people pleaser....it would venture to guess they would prefer a winner and should adjust their expectations accordingly.

In the end this is why CK is more of a Pro Coach than college coach and why we won't have him for long....but let's hope he can endure this stuff and stay for a while longer.

  • BREAKING NEWS: Today Chip woke up, smiled, and went to practice ready to win a Fiesta Bowl, still not caring about the crybaby booster.
