Running the spread was a strategic move by Belotti to overcome or disadvantages in recruiting. In order to run successful pro-style offense you need a good to great prostyle QB and a certain style of OL. There are only so many good prostyle QB's and all the top programs are after them. They are also difficult to develope, Oregon also had a difficulty getting top OLinemen. If you don't get top OL then, you can try to beat the USC's, Oklahoma's, Michigan's, and Alabama's of the world playing their style with less talent, go after undersized but athletic OL (and run a spread), or get huge OL and play B1G style ball (try to out physical the opponent). Going to the spread was a big picture move.

It also makes no sense to abandon the spread after the players we have are a fit for the style. Also, most teams are running some sort of element of the spread in order to keep up with the scoring. If you want switch to a prostyle, then expect to have atleast 2 down years and see a bunch of talent transfer while we transition (see Michigan w/ RichRod).

I don't want to see anything like the RichRod version of Michigan. Lets hope for continuity.
