Is Barner the answer with LMJ Leaving?

  • Curious as to some of your thoughts. Barner clearly isn't LMJ in terms of strength and "creating extra yardage." but just because Barner isn't LMJ doesn't mean the team drops next year. I suppose Barner is the top option to carry the load.

  • Barner isn't as strong as LMJ?? Um, have you seen KB recently?? KB hasn't been able to put together a pedigree because he's always been the 2nd RB. He still had 900+ yards rushing this last year as the back-up. KB getting full-time carries will really show his power and ability to dominate a game. People were doubting this last year when LMJ went down, whether or not KB could handle the ASU game. And he rushed for 140 yards. He'll be just fine.

  • I don't think he is as elusive but I think he runs stronger than LMJ. KB is the answer and if he comes back he will put a nice stamp on his legacy as another talented Duck RB.

  • Chip has talked before about building the offense around his players each year. Oregon has some good, but unproven, young running back talent. My guess is that he will rely on Barner as the primary running back, but build an offensive strategy to suit the team's multiple strengths: blazing speed, versatility (e.g., Josh Huff), a whole mess of good young (but, again, unproven) receivers, Colt Lyerla. (Plus, I think Barner will surprise some folks with his almost-LaMike-like production next year.)

  • Barner will be the primary back but has a ton of depth that he'll be splitting time with. But he's got the talent to have a 1400-yard season.

Also his upper body is stronger than LMJ; LMJ has a stronger lower body.

  • Barner is not a tougher runner than LMJ. He runs too upright. He HAS been beyond adequate running in short yardage situations. It's not like he's a pushover. However, it will remain to be seen how fresh he is in the 2nd half of games after 15+ carries.

Barner will get attention as one of the top RBs in the PAC-12 with both LMJ and Polk leaving.

I think that's pretty much a given if he stays healthy. In fact I could see him breaking some of LMJ's single season records because Barner won't have a...Barner...behind him taking carries. Would anyone be surprised if he went for 1800 yards and 20 TDs?

I would. Pleasantly, mind you. I don't think Barner's quite at LMJ's level.

Barner should have a better OL and passing game next year.

Barner isn't as durable, fast or aggressive as LMJ. He's shiftier and a better receiver but isn't as much of an attacker as LMJ.

But I do think he can get ~1400 yards. Any more and I think he's improved.

    Yeah pretty much.

  • Agreed, hopefully Thomas can take his passing up to the next level i.e. figuring out how to fix his high delivery on the downfield throws. That is THE glaring weakness in his game. I'm not sure if having to throw to Tuinei at 6'5 and De'Anthony at 5'10/Huff at 5'11 makes any difference. Figures that ball out, and a few other tweaks and he is not a 60-62 percent passer but a 65-67. Going into his senior year that should be expected. OL should have more overall talent and depth as well. People like Weems were decent but getting a Long, for instance, in there is an upgrade IMO.

That's never going to happen. His motion is his motion and we have to live with it. However the passing game should improve because(if healthy) we have superior athletes at tackle(Weems = ugh, and yes I know he's been hurt) to protect him and we will have superior athletes at WR to get open more quickly. That's my spin.

  • Hard to replace the most productive running back in Oregon history, but RB has been a strength in the program for years, so I'm not worried about who steps in. I worry more about the overall depth with an injury or two we'll be a little thin.

USC is like a german car, every piece that breaks is of the highest quality.

  • My own take is that LaMichael was an A+ while Barner is a non-grade-inflated A- (still a very good grade; few of my students ever quibble with it). I have had more confidence in LaMichael in making something happen, and I am always fretting a fumble with Barner. I hope he has a banner year being top dog.

Beyond that, obviously DAT will both run and catch the ball; we have yet to see what Carson can do with the starting line and the game still in the balance; and who knows how quickly Marshall and our second back will gel. No one on this thread has really considered what has been discussed on another thread and that is with all the WR talent we have emerging, what about Huff as a running back -- or at least a hybrid?

Even with the great one leaving, things look bright and ducky at Running Back U.

Good Point JD. I think Huff could be the number 2 guy next year as he knows the offense and is well seasoned, opening another slot at WR.

  • Check out the USC game last year people... Barner has played at a very high level, in some games higher than LMJ. He will be All Pac 12 if he returned next year. LMJ was the best running back we have ever had at Oregon, but it doesn't mean Barner is not special himself. His jump cutting ability is awesome in our zone read schemes and he has plenty of speed.

  • Zero disrespect intended here, but ... why are we all of a sudden so sure that Kenyon will be back now?

    MacMallard1

  • And just who do you suppose it is going to be if not Barner? You have someone else at this point who has a better CV to fill the position?
