Loved Warrick in college. Didn't he also have a great 18 ft jumper too? Haven't seen enough film on Bell to know if he has that kind of range on his J. It's great to see a defender like Bell not just playing defense on guys but attacking the ball and man. The thing I noticed about Bell is he let's guys get by him, thinking that they have a lay in only to have their sh!t thrown to the 4th row. It's been a long time since the Duckies have had a defender like him. I know you go back further than me Mac, as I have only been following the Ducks hoop team close since I got down there in 97' but I can't think of any defenders like him who attacked the ball in that time frame.
One thing that makes me happy about the staff is they are trying hard to fix their areas of need. They went out and got more length and athleticism at the 2 spot. They went out and got the PG of the future and now they are working on getting longer and more athletic in the front court. I think they missed on the kid form Westview, as I just see him as a back up type of talent and I'm not really sold on Waverly either(although he has improved over the season). I'm I the only one who think he looks kind of soft out there?

I'd agree that Waverly looks soft, and lost sometimes, but he has improved as the season has progressed. Woods was very much like Austin last year, where he would show flashes of ability and toughness, and then suddenly disapear altogether. I still don't understand how Woods/Austin can't do a better job on the boards.

Yeah, UW bigs avg 8 or so RPG while Woods is at 3. Rebounding takes desire, if either guy wants to play in the NBA they need to fix that part of their game.

I actually think that Austin will be a better offensive player next year than Woods is this year. He is much more skilled in the post-game, and has great touch around the rim. He will need to become a better rebounder, and continue to improve in defense though. My guess is that Austin will be in better conditioning to start out next season, and he could have a big breakout.

As for Bell, he has a ton of upside as a defender and rebounder. He's a tremendous athlete that can play multiple positions. His offensive game is very raw, so he will need to develop on that end to contribute a lot. I could see him being a lock-down defender that eventually develops into a Carlos Emory-esque offensive player.

  • More then desire I think anticipation is the key to being a good rebounder. Woods isn't a good rebounder and will never be.

  • We've never had a forward, who can block shots like Bell ... nothing even close, really, and you are right; I go WAY back .... Bell is that out-of-nowhere, weakside shot-blocker that we've been craving ... Bell's shooting range is a bit limited, but it is improved and improving ... He also has good hands and is quite the finisher on the break! He'll also be terrific in our presses. (He sure would look good, playing next to Aaron Gordon, but that's another subject, isn't it).

    MacMallard1

  • yes, rebounding takes desire ... it also takes "FEEL" ... doesn't have the greatest feel (anticipation), for where the carom is going ... I don't know if watching tapes of Bill Walton, or Kevin McHale, or Kevin Love would help, but those guys always have their hands up and READY to catch ... our 5's have their hands down, far too much, and as a result, they can't react in time ...

And after seeing Gordon at the LSI Mac, I think he's just scratching the surface. He still has yet to develop a jumper. He is a grown man athlete right now, but he still has a ton of areas to get better in. And that's one of the first things I thought about Bell, he's going to really good in presses.

Aaron Gordon is a better Shawn Marion. Athletic freak, average outside shooter, terrific rebounder and finisher around the rim. Is also a very good athlete on defense that can literally guard almost anyone on the floor, point guard or center. He fits perfectly at Oregon next year if they get him. Would IMO likely be a starting SF or PF but could also play some center if needed. If Oregon got him I'd project Oregon's starting lineup next year as:

    C - Waverly Austin
    PF - Ben Carter
    SF - Aaron Gordon
    SG - Daymean Dotson
    PG - Dominic Artis

They'd still be lacking an outside shooter but they'd have a few options off the bench there.

You don't think Bell would eventually crack the starting lineup?

    KeepOnDucking

  • Yeah, Austin had good stretches yesterday ... I've by no means given up hopes there ....

  • Aaron Gordon reminds me of a little bit bigger version of Rudy Gay ... can do everything ....

  • I like that lineup, Matt ...

Bell subs in for Carter, and they basically play about 20 minutes each ...

Gordon would start, day one ...

AND ... by all accounts, Abdul-Bassit can ball ... 48% FG / 43% 3 / 82% FT ... long and spidery ... from the very little I've seen of him, he's a slightly "shorter" version of Justin Holliday ... (and, as i say, if the UW coaches know anything, its an excellent Wing, when they see one ... and UW came hot and heavy after Jalil ... albeit too late in the game) ...

    MacMallard1

  • Agree, Matt, Gordon's just getting warmed up ... unlimited ceiling ...

    MacMallard1

  • Bell looks like someone who would play at Memphis, U Conn, Syracuse, Minnesota, or Marquette, type-thing ... long, fast-twitchy - explosive ...

I agree with this. He's a long and rangy athlete that can be incredible in zone and man defense, but he's also a physical player.

  • I like Carter's game, but I have a hard time believing he can hold onto the starting spot over Bell IF we sign Gordon. Like Mac said, Bell is the type of player we have salivated over for years and never had. He's a athletic freak, who will give teams fits.

Bell doesn't have enough of an offensive game to supplant Carter. I expect big things from Carter next season as well.

  • Carter, much as I DO like him, and I've been wanting more minutes to go his way, hasn't shown a lot of offense, either ... I think Carter and Bell will pretty evenly split those 4 minutes, by about half way through the season ... Bell can also play the 5, when we press ...
