  • Thats' also my take on the recruiting situation Oregon finds itself in. Chip is focused on looking for quality recruits that fit his system. This is the downside of slow playing the recruiting game. It is what it is. That being said, wouldn't be surprised with late signing surprise(s). He working hard to flip Jack etc. time will tell.

  • Where are all of the "We close strong" people that bashed me when I said recruiting wasn't going to be what we've become use too this year?

The sky is not falling and we'll be ok BUT we had better make sure we don't go down this same path next year. I don't believe we can have back to back recruiting years like this and maintain a top 5 position.

  • Seems this year USC filled up early and many of the head-to-head school recruiting battles happened between us and either Stanford and UCLA.

Having two good schools in LA hurts us. While Stanford is showing no hangover from the Harbaugh era. Come play for an Ivy league school that actually plays in the BCS championship bowls is a pretty good story.

I like the staff's approach to recruiting but if commits keep trending sooner then they will have to step up their recruiting game plans sooner.

USC is like a german car, every piece that breaks is of the highest quality.

  • Oregon for whatever reason slow played way to many kids this year - The staff needs to identify the 25-30 kids they want to go after, get them up here in the camp season and lock them down. Like it or not, you need to have 10-15 kids locked down in the summer.

This class from an average star perspective is still in line with the last three classes (top 15) so its not a train wreck or anything. But when you have the "opening" down the block, facilities, nike, top 5 program, ect. you should be able to sleep walk to a top 10 class. There were way to many kids that "wanted to hear from UO" this year who we let slip away.

I'm one of those you are referring to, but I'm getting close to agreeing with you as one after another of the kids we've been pursuing for months have committed elsewhere. Hopefully, we can finish strong but it's getting harder to believe it's going to happen.

  • Sucks as a fan, but thats just because we all want the pomp and circumstance we think we deserve with:
4 straight years of BCS games.
    B2B BCS Bowl wins.
Conference Dominance outside of 3 games over the past 4 years, etc. etc.

I would like to close with Jack at the very least and throw in McEvoy, Hunt, and Cunningham and Id be stoked. Class would be Quality over Quantity.

  • Sleep walk to a top ten class? Never gonna happen. We have three plus weeks left. I am patient. Fitts, Jack, Hunt and others squarely in our sites. Chip will close. Shall we revisit this on 2/7/13? Me thinks so.

  • Losing Redmond was devastating when combined with last years complete and utter failure to land a SINGLE highschool OL. We had 17 scholarship linemen in 2008, we have 11? now.

Yeah, the sunshine pumpers get just as annoying as the sky-is-falling folks.

It's somewhere in the middle, as always.

What we have here (and last year at OL) is a situation where the coaches' recruiting strategy is not 100% successful. They are whiffing big at some positions and maybe with some top prospects. You can trust the coaches all you want, but they ain't perfect, nobody is. So they've got to come up with a way to succeed in this recruiting environment because, let's face it, it's harder to recruit to Eugene, Oregon, than a lot of other places.

This team will be fine, but next year the coaches need to lock up some real talent at OL and LB and DT because if they don't, this will not be a top 5 program.

Only eight or nine, I believe.

"devastating"? seriously ... it was devastating? high school seniors haven't proven anything yet ... Boyett's injury was devastating. Missing a gimme field goal was devastating. Not getting a Los Angeles kid to leave Los Angeles is certainly not devastating.

if we end up trading Redmond for Hunt, ... I think we'll be pretty pleased

Actually Boyetts injury proved to be not very devestating at all. Well, not for the team at least. Devestating for John though. Patterson stepped right in and handled his biz. Then Dargan after Patterson. The next man up philosophy was in full effect in the secondary. Redmond is certainly not devestating considering we have a chance with Hunt, Porter, Falah, Oser or Purcel to take his spot and they are all just as talented. Now when Dennis Dixon went down, that was devestating.

I am in complete agreement with this. And I am not bashing the staff. I just think we need to learn from this year and start our recruiting process sooner than we have been.

I also don't think this year will end up being as bad as some think. I do think we will close with a solid class of 19-21 commits that will be in the top 15-20 range. But that being said, I think we have to make the necessary adjustments to get some commits signed sooner next year while still holding to the same standards that Chip has become known for.

So you think it's okay that we can BARELY even line up a 2 deep? Look at what happened to Oregon State in 2011. 3 injuries and they were starting walkons and true freshmen. Yeah we have more talent, but this is a very serious issue. Are you just another head in the sand excuse maker? We didn't take a SINGLE HS OL last year and everybody rationalized that THIS was going to be a big year for OL recruiting(even though last year on the west coast was historically deep) and THIS is the class we have? A 2 star nobody and 2 in state guys? OL is the single most important position on the team, not QB. Obviously 10 OL> 1 QB, but the point remains valid. We cannot continue to FAIL at recruiting OL and expect to maintain this success.

This is intellecually lazy and insulting to all the programs that are beating us for recruits. If they go somewhere else is always because they didn't fit our system because our coaches hold recruits to some mysterious higher standard. Give me a break. They are flat out getting their butts kicked on the recruiting trail for whatever reason, sanctions, NFL, whatever, doesn't change the reality that dozens and dozens of highly rated players have spurned Oregon for other schools.

    Agree.

It's ok to be a passionate fan and still understand when we've gotten our tales whooped.

For whatever reason it has seemed like we've turned off some high level athletes this year. To continue to be great we must continue to evolve. I believe we've fallen short in that area this year.
