Mariota vs Manziel.....

  • With all the hype surrounding Manziel I decided to break down Mariotas season stats had he played as much minutes as Johnny Football. I took into account that Manziel played about twice the amount of minutes as Mariot. I also took into account the four games Marcus did actually play a full game and I also took into account that MM did not even play a full half in a couple games.

I worked with MM's game averages and went from there. These are the stats I came up with had MM played the same amount of minutes as Manziel.

    Marcus Mariota:

    PASSING:

    Comp/Att/yards: 327/468, 3767 yds
    Yards per play: 8.0
    Comp%: 69.9%
    TD's: 45
    Int: 9

    RUSHING:

    Att/yds: 147/1035 yds
    Yds per carry: 7.0yds
    Long: 86yds
    TD's: 8

    Total yards: 4802 yds

    Johhny Manziel:

    PASSING:

    Comp/Att/Yards: 273/400 3419yds
    Yards per play: 8.5yds
    Comp%: 68.3%
    TD's: 24
    Int: 8

    RUSHING:

    Att/Yds: 184/1181yds
    Yds per carry: 6.4yds
    Long: 72
    TD's: 19

    Total yds: 4652yds

Pretty scary how similar these kids are? Mariota seems to be the better passer and Manziel the better runner, but you have to take into consideration that Manziel was A&M's leading rusher and Mariota had perhaps the best RB unit backing him in Barner, DAT and Marshall.

So obviously Mariota did not have to carry the rock nearly as much as Manziel. Unfortunately, the Heismen commitee doesn't crunch numbers like I have done, but I think it's clearly obvious Mariota should've been in the Heismen conversation.

Also, I didn't take into account the games Mariota didn't play in the second half that his stats most likely would've gone up had he played the full game considering the first half dominance.

Yes, both are phenom freshmen. Both had difficult schedules. Mariota took our Ducks to an 11-1 season and to a fourth BCS Bowl appearence where his #4 team in thr nation will play the #5 KSU cats for hopefully a 12-1 season and a #2-3 finish. Manziel had two losses over his season and we will see what A&M does in their Bowl. Poing being....MARIOTA FOR HEISMEN!!!!

  • WOW..... Just the thought of Mariota playing full games and scoring FIFTY touchdowns is insane... totally crazy. But, awesome!!!!! Mariota for Heisman!!!!

  • Marcus should be in NYC but they only had room for one freshman QB and Manziel beat Bama...so that did that in unfortunately.

Marcus is going to hold every record and be the best Oregon QB in history when all is said and done. Hell he might be already.

  • I am on the record saying that I think Mariota is a better qb than Manziel. These numbers that extrapolate Mariota's stats over a seasons worth of full games are tools that can be used to back the point of Mariota's superiority as a qb.

I am also on the record saying that I think Manziel deserves the Heisman this year. This is because, even though he is not the best player, he had the best season.

I don't think you can give the Heisman to Mariota, or anyone else, based on what they coulda/woulda/shoulda done if playing time or circumstances were different. The point to me is that Mariota may have put those numbers up but this year, he didn't. Manziel did put up his numbers, and his numbers led to his team being much improved in terms of wins. I think he had the best season in cfb.

  • To be honest... I don't really understand the hype around John Manziel. His running ability is first rate and he has unique abilities to prolong plays and make passes down the field. Heisman trophy, though? I think there's been a huge hype train surrounding the guy... I don't think we should even be talking about Manziel for Heisman. If anything, it should be a case study on how to effectively hype a guy for post-season awards

They were leading versus Arkansas 44-10 and Manziel was still playing deep into the 4th quarter. Not only was he playing, he was still running the ball into their defense. It's just stupid why any coach (Sumlin) would accept such a risk on their quarterback. I'm glad Chip Kelly isn't that irresponsible. Manziel also benefits from a sketchy Texas A&M defense. They gave up 56 points to Louisiana Tech. He was in the game far longer in quite a few games than Mariota would have been. (For the record, I don't think Mariota should be a Heisman candidate either (at this point in his career.))

Why is it that people are so quick to overlook the losses? Manziel threw three INT's at LSU and blew the game for his team.

Whew! Hating that hard is not easy! It's difficult to come up with all these criticisms of a 19 year-old kid. lol

I personally hope Manti Te'o wins the award. Kid has been spectacular this year, deserves the award and is the leader of the #1 team in the country.

    Te'o for Heisman! clap

That's what LM James said about him last year before Marcus ever started a game

Edit: Sorry not last year, before this season started

I think it will be hard for a linebacker to win the Heisman over a player who has the ball in his hands every play, but we shall see. There have been other linebackers in college football history with better stats than te'o that were never mentioned in the heisman race, so talking about "hype" I think it surrounds Te'0, if ND isn't in the Natty Te'o isn't in NY

  • Great breakdown and it shows why we all believe in our very bright future with MM but lets not discount what Johhny accomplished dude had a great year and so did many others.
This is a tough year to chose for the Heisman. the Heisman is a popularity award going to the player who is most hyped on one of the nations top teams. I stopped caring who the award goes to years ago, unless one of our guys gets it of course, because it rarely goes to the MVP of the entire league....BTW Jarvis Jones deserves to go instead of Manti Teo he had better numbers (last imchecked) and M Lee from USC should be the winner dude is ridiculous....both are deserving but I don't mind Manzeil getting the award if he wins, he played great against some of the best defenses in the nation as a FR, damn impressive.

  • Thanks for the stats, KOD. I agree with the posters who are both simultaneously excited about Marcus and understanding why Manziel gets so much hype.

With that being said: I don't QUITE get why he's the front-runner. Didn't Klein have a pretty darn good season for a 1-loss team? I hate to always fall back on "SEC bias", but... it looks like Johnny Football might be getting a bit too much credit primarily because he beat Alabama.

Te'o would be the weakest hesiman winner, ever. He doesn't deserve it, there have been better LB who did it throughout their entire career who didn't even get a invite to NY.

  • Give MM one more year and we will see him in NewYork this time next year..

    duckdeb

  • Think MM is outstanding and that Johnny football is a stud.

They both have a great understanding of the game. I think MM has a brighter future as he has the height for the next level and a better arm.

That being said John put up some amazing numbers against the best defenses in the country and against more top competition then MM. Not taking anything away from MM as I would pick him everyday. But did he face the same competition?

I think we all know what we have and that the future is bright for the the green and yellow as well as for MM.

But this year, Manziel has the numbers and the resume to get him to NY.

Manziel had a terrific year, so did Marcus. They are equally talented but I'd take Marcus because I like his mechanics and demeanor better.

Manti Te'o does not deserve the award though.

Jarvis Jones is the best linebacker in the country.
