Great news guys, I still thought he was head of compliance. I can breath a little easier now, and I retract my other stmts. Sorry.

  • Dee was Miami AD from 1993-2008. He was on the Infractions Committee from 2001-2010 (there is a 9 year limit) and served as the chairman from 2008-2010. http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/story/15446543/miamis-exad-new-poster-child-for-college-football-hypocrisy

Interesting fact I just learned about Paul Dee he was also the interim AD in 1991 (Dave Maggard was AD 1991-1993), so he was around for the most of the pell grant fraud not just the end of it. http://hurricanesports.cstv.com/school-bio/mifl-school-bio-ad.html

Thing is you have Dee running the complience dept. and he was the AD in charge of compliance at Miami when this was going on. He should resign or at least recuse himself from the case. IMHO this will not happen and Miami could get a slap on the wrist because of Dee. It is not who you blow, it is who you know.

I can't possibly see Emmert allowing him to oversee this particular review...With all the backlash the NCAA gets, that would be just about the worst decision ever!!

  • Wow! That was a long read......a lot of information and stories.

To be honest, it kind of makes my stomach a little uneasy. It paints a picture of just how dirty college athletics can be. While this is and exceptional example of what can happen, I'd be willing to bet that stuff like this goes on at a majority of the high profile programs around big cities, in some form, at some level. This was not an isolated incident by one man either. His partner at his sports marketing business was confirmed by an ex-player to be paying and providing benefits.

This is nothing new and I'm sure this stuff is still going on all the time. The only way these types of things will be largely eradicated is with sweeping changes that hold coaches AND players accountable. In case any of you missed Geoff Schwartz's piece addressing these kinds of things, check out: Players Don't Respecet the NCAA; It's Time For Change. Our brilliant Oregon alum was spot on in assessing the current situation and how to correct it.

  • I was listening to Freddie Coleman on ESPN radio on the way home tonight, and he was asking callers to call in with what they think the penalties should be; if everything that has been alleged is confirmed to be true by the NCAA.

The one thing that Freddie said that caught me off guard was that as part of their penatlies, they should be put on probation for four years and lose 5 scholarships each of those years...... My first thought was, "There's no way that they don't get hit harder than USC did!"

I am certainly no USC sympathizer but it’s rather curious how hard they got hit compared to others with much more serious and widespread violations. If this turns out to be true……man, it don’t look good for the U. This is like a hundred levels higher than free tattoos and selling gear!

Ya, there's no way on the 5 schollies per year. Would USC be able to sue the NCAA if such penalty WAS enforced? This is a very sticky scenario and although I'm not a huge fan of seeing kids punished for things done years before, I think the "death penalty" fits the acts committed. It's tragic, and I think the penalty will be as well. I can't imagine the affect that would have on a school like Miami.

jriv, it is not the kids, it is the institution, according to yahoo they new about it, and staff cooperated, and endorsed it.

  • Maybe, I see it this way, according to the NCAA current players can transfer out ala USC without sitting out the 1 yr, and any verbles can change their destination, as they have not signed their LOI. So the kids answer is abandon ship and go to a clean program. The U then sinks which is not a bad thing in my book.

Except for transitions. Depth chart, new offense/defense, having to make the decision to leave your dream school. I don't envy them.

Good point, that would not be fun.

  • I guess this is good news for FSU, Florida, South Florida, and every other Florida school. I wouldn't be surprised to see a flood of decommittments in the coming weeks and months.

It's difficult to tell exactly how much the school knew about this but it seems safe to assume that they didn't make any attempt to find out. This is college football at its worst. This Nevin character and his partner are slime bags. I'm glad he's behind bars. This guy makes Will Lyles look like a Saint!
