  • Sorry if I got the spelling wrong.

Both of these guys are big NW Defensive Tackles. How good are they and what are our odds? Is Aiken talking to them?

This is more of a question for the moderators.

DT is always the toughest spot to recruit and here we have two 300 pounders in our backyard. The only knock might be both are barely over 6 ft. Marcus Griffin is a third NW DT and about 6'3" 280.

I'd love to hear Justin's take on all 3.

And guys....look back over the past 10 years and tell me how many highly rated d-tackles we got out of HS. Not many. Ngata was the only one. Most were 3 stars or less like Igor, Wade, Linehan, Rashon Pittman, or Valenzuela OR converted lower ranked DEs or JCs.

In the past ten years or more the only 4 stars were Ricky and Faatetee and the only 5 star was Haloti. Even with Chip and all that success that is all we got. We did spurned by many, many more.

    So......

Be realistic. Those 3 might be our best shot.

  • Height may not be as big an issue with Aiken as it was with Azz and CK. IMO, as long as we continue to play a rotation of 2 DL units (starters play 6 downs then 2nd guys come in for 3-4, etc) then I think the tall, leaner interior DL guys aren't as big a deal. I think the primary recruiting factor is can the prospect practice at the pace we do? Games are far easier.

IMO Azz was getting too picky. Interior DL players are the toughest to recruit primarily because in our part of the country there just isn't very many of them. Furthermore, pulling some kids like this out of SEC country is extremely unlikely. I have no problem with the Ducks extending some offers, but what I don't want to see is us get into Dec/Jan and still having most of the DL numbers uncommitted. Need to identify more kids in the western half of the country and recruit them hard.

It's funny to me to listen to people bag on Azz about being "too picky" when DL is one of the deepest, talent laden positions on the team. I could maybe get it if there was no good D lineman on the team, but that's just not the case

I agree but the class separation is still a little scary. Next year we have AA, Buckner, Bair, Kamp, and Balducci as guys that can play inside and no true NT. Obviously the coaches are after something different then the traditional 3-4 front.

Probably cause its not like he produced some of the best d lines I've seen at Oregon and before Azz we were getting big 5* dline prospects left and right... oh wait...

MBV, I agree that Jerry and the staff had good success in '12 with the likes of Balducci, Buckner, Carriger, Bair, et al. If we're totally honest, we got Armstead more due to the failure of other teams. He doesn't end up a Duck if not for the issues at SC or if Tosh had stayed at Cal. What I found odd was this past '13 season where very few offers were extended and of course, whether it was on Azz or more on issues with EV himself, we just didn't recruit many kids. True we didn't need as many, but we hardly targeted any and Prevot was the result at least as much of MH's efforts. Finally, go back to the '11 class and we only brought in 3 DLs, Ebert, Koa, & Kamp. Not exactly the numbers I heard that we were shooting for.

Now, what I'm getting at primarily when I say "too picky" is targeting the body type of the tall, leaner kid to play inside. I have no problem if that is who we end up with as many kids like Hart who fit more of that type are tremendous players. My issue is were we too narrow in trying to focus too much on one body type? I don't disagree that the kid who comes in at 6'4+ & 250-275 can still end up being tremendously effective. But I just hope Aiken has a broader scope of targets because I think more kids can play in our defensive style than it appears Chip & Azz thought could.

Your pretty much spot on with what you just said and Aiken, people will find out is a far better recruiter than AZZ, That guy lost way more than he brought in, and I believe Aiken once He get's a guy he's focused on he'll probably more than not close the Deal. Oregon is a known commodity now that kid's are talking about, and the reason Helfrich brought a guy like Aiken in is they wanted to improve this one area, and that's the D Line. Aiken is a upgrade over AZZ, and if anybody disagree's with that shouldn't be making Football statement's at all.

I have no beef with Azz the coach as folks like MBV and others have correctly pointed out, he was integral in the improvement of not only our DL play, but our entire defense. I think it's obvious that Nick, John Neal & Pellum would all quickly concur that he helped upgrade their own collective & individual understanding of defensive schemes & techniques.

However, I really want to see us improve in terms of our DL recruiting being more broad when it comes to reaching out to more kids and also the type of players. I concur with you that Aiken should be an upgrade, esp in terms of recruiting end results.

  • Most said is accurate and I have no beef with it. Just thinking Chip and Azz wanted taller wide bodies with great wingspan at DT. Epic that of all positions we can't seem to get the big brutish momma's boy we covet. Length and weight has benefits but wide is sometimes just as good.

  • Didn't we lead FBS in sacks or top 3 in 2011 and lead the FBS in Forced TO? A lot if that gas to do with our D line play. There is a reason CK took Jim along even though I wish he could have got 2-3 highly rated recruits.

  • Your honor(s) I would like to re- direct.

How good are these 3 kids and are we talking? Can we talk about them and not about a now gone coach?
