Nevada game-week thread

  • Moving on from last week.

Give me some thoughts on this week's first home game against Nevada.

What do the members of DT expect? Improvements? Changes? Gameplan?

  • First I'm not ready to move on...haven't turned on the tv, looked at espn, rewatched the game. Shut everything off and played with my kids for the rest of the weekend before school starts. Anyway, more to the point, I think it will be very difficult to get a whole lot of satisfaction from this next game. We could beat them 250-0 and it won't erase our flop last game. Also it won't teach us too much as I expect darron to have more time, the OLine should mash these guys, LMJ, kb, DaT will have room. All our athletes will far outshine the kids Nevada runs out against us. So basically anything but a drubbing will be a disappointment.

Okay, still showing my frustration...sorry. 1st and foremost I'd like to see if DT can actually run the ball. Only kept the ball twice against LSU. Very important to me. Secondly I'd like to see his accuracy improve and also see him throw with more finesse in short routes. He was throwing darts at guys 3 yards downfield...difficult to catch that type of ball. 3rd I'd love to eliminate the drops and also see a few more playmakers on the field. Lyerla, Vaughn, maybe Blackmon, a healthy Huff. 4th I would really like to see what KB has in him and I don't want him fielding punts. Heels on the 10 is remedial school knowledge for punt returning and he just couldn't stop himself. 5th...more DaT. But, with some serious ball security! Tuck the ball when running free. We need to learn if he can take the hits and hold the ball. 6th keep TMitchell in as he needs the game time reps for experience. I am and was happy with the defense except for it seemed we didn't get to the passer enough.

  • I'm watching Oregon Football with Chip Kelly right now. If you think back, our defense did a fantastic job except for the one 60 yard TD drive in which LSU ran a hurry up offense. Oregon was doing a good job of making some good short passes and we even had a few good runs, including LMJ TD run. At this point in the game LSU's defense was getting tired and things were going pretty well. If we could have continued like that I think we win going away.
Those two consecutive turnovers by DAT in the second half were the difference makers. It wore our defense down and didn't allow us to continue to wear the LSU defense down like we had been earlier.

Anyway, I am looking forward to the Nevada game. They are replacing several players on both sides of their line as well, so we have something in common with them. One of the big differences is that they also have a new quarterback and running back. Vai Taua and Colin Kaepernick only accounted for 60 touchdowns last year, so those are some pretty big shoes to fill. Does anyone know much about these guys? They have solid recievers and linebackers but I think we should be able to have a lot of success if we don't turn the ball over too much.

  • I would like for them to come out and execute! No, not execute Nevada. Don't know about making changes, will that solve anything? Or is time as a cohesive unit what's needed?

After watching the replay with analysis by Chip Kelly and Jorgenson, I really don't think the play calling was all that bad. I am actually really happy with the play calling and strategy we used. We just played a really, really good defense.

Like you said L. Perry, we just need to execute better. Clean some stuff up and execute and we'll be back to Duck football of old next week.

  • Want to see a bunch of the younger guys play. Fischer, Carson, DAT, Lyerla, and all the young wideouts need snaps. Like Chip says you can't manufacture experience and we are going to need some of these guys over the course of the season.

  • Iam going to be in victoria bc this weekend..any way to get the game on the internet?

  • The goal for the Nevada game is significant progress for the younger guys and new starters on the line ... which will be needed to get the offense back in synch. The defense was OK against LSU and will be outstanding when Cliff and Kiki come back.

Another factor last Saturday ... that was an away game. DT had to change plays at the line constantly, slowing down our offense big time. The crowd noise was a non factor for LSU and hurt our communications a lot. Also the national games have a ton of breaks for commercials, another factor negating the "hurry up" Duck offense. Playing at Autzen is a HUGE advantage for the Ducks and I think the offense will reflect it.

That said ... Nevada can be tough. The NV offense blew Cal out last year. Bellotti always said that a college football team always makes its biggest gain between game one and two. We'll see who gains the most ... the Ducks or NV. I'm predicting a Duck win 48-10.

Is the Game going to be televised I need to get the bad taste of the loss out of my mind?

  • What has bothered me is a recurring feeling I got about mid-way in 2010. I felt even in the middle of the season, I and others, felt that Oregon was 'holding back' on plays. It was discussed, but it seemed to be a consensus that it was simply Oregon 'hiding' plays for big games.

We talk about all this team speed and the potential for so many different plays, yet I feel we rarely see the defense stretched. Mis-direction, QB options/fakes, reverses, sweeps... all these things that I feel we have an advantage in running to open up RB holes doesnt really seems to be there. For the opposing team defense the plan should be just stuff the hell out the middle with 7 and have all DBs play the quick in or out. The one real solid mis-direction vs LSU (IMO limited FB opinion) netted a wide open pitch and catch for a TD.

Maybe its just me, but the offense feels like it is narrowed down to a couple of base plays, lacks aggressiveness to utilize our speed to breakdown defenses, keep them off balanced and open up the running holes for the RBs.

And if the Ducks down win the next 2 games by over 100 combined points I will be surprised.

NEVADA - They had an NFL QB in 2010 and that's it. Their may have a very good coach, but this team has been going nowhere in recruiting for 8 years. They recruit far under even a Wazzu level. If the game is close it is because Oregon is not executing its offense and turning the ball over again.

I keep seeing these huge game scores but I'm trying to ignore them so I'm not set up for another disappointment. I think Nevada is largely underrated as an upcoming program. I know they lost CK and their RB but I think 3 TD's (MOV) would be a good performance by our young inexperienced team :)

If Belotti's remarks are true I expect a very strong showing on offense. Regardless of how many points we put up the part I will most likely focus on is the play of the defense. I think that will be the determining factor if we are to 3 peat as PAC champs.

  • Say the best case scenario happens and Oregon rallies to go up 45-0 at the half or something out of hand. Does Chip pull the starters or get more valuable game time for the 1's?

    Thoughts?

  • Nevada lost a lot of offense but they return 7 starters from their defense. The Pistol is hard to defend but we will be up to it. Close early and then Oregon by 3 TD's.
