OT: What's your favorite beer right now?

  • I had some Double Mountain IRA about a week ago. It's a Red IPA. It was incredible.

Double Mountain is out of Bend, Ore.

Headed to Portland for the Opening next week and I'm excited to get up there and try some new beer out. Any suggestions on bars or great places for beer for me?

  • A favorite is too hard for me, but make sure you visit Hair of the Dog in Portland. If you want a bar with selection, The Horse Brass is great and Belmont Station is a couple blocks away with thousands of choices.

    JHop,

Double Mountain is in Hood River.

My favorite beer(s) right now are coming from Boneyard out of Bend. Their RPM IPA, Diablo Rojo, and their seasonal Skunkape IRA are amazing.

  • New Castle is the weirdest "beer" I've ever tasted.

These days I love Ninkasi Oatis. Pretty much any IPA will do the trick. Heater Allen Pils is great on tap. As always, Bridgeport IPA is great as are Mirrorpond and Black Butte Porter. Mix MP and BBP together for a Dirty Pond! New Seasons gets Pliny the Elder in occasionally. Not really worth the money on a regular basis but it's good to try if you're really into beer.

  • Paceña.

A Bolivian lager, it's a really refreshing yet tasteful beer.

Austral is my favorite Chilean beer, but I don't think either get up to the States.

Still love Widmer even though it's not as good as it used to be.

I was there last summer and it was pretty disappointing. The service was awful. I wanted to do a dirty pond and they wouldn't make one for me. So I asked if I could have 2 beers and an empty glass, and they said no. So my buddy asked if he could have a mirror pond and I could have a BBP and could we have an extra glass, and they said no. I mean come on, I'm at the freakin brewery and they are all stuck up about drinking some damn beer!

Widmer is great with their seasonal variety but I don't think the overall quality is as high as many of the more local craft breweries that aren't able to crank out so many different beers at such high volume.

  • Widmer Drop Top Amber Ale remains my favorite beer, however I will say Blue Moon & Chimay are sounding really good right about now!

The Twilight Summer Ale is pretty good, but I think that The Abyss is my favorite from Deschutes.

Drop Top Amber on draught is great, in the bottle it's just okay.

That's one of the few places I go and have to get a paddle or taster platter of beer. So many great choices.

  • Screw Deschutes Brewery. I've boycotted them ever since they tried to get the Oregon legislature to shut down every small brewery in the state after their attorneys found some 100 year old bs law on the books.

Be careful with Hair of the Dog I walked right by it and didn't even notice it. It's just some inconspicuous building that used to be a mechanics shop I think. It's just across the Morrison Bridge, so it isn't far from "downtown". Belmont Station is definitely not downtown but this is their current draft list alone.

Gigantic The City Never Sleeps Dark Saison
    Russian River Blind Pig IPA
    Hop Valley Pollination
    Oskar Blues Deviant Dales
    GoodLife Comatose Imperial IPA
Evil Twin Ron & the Beast Ryan
    Deschutes The Stoic
    Elysian Yuzu Golden Ale
    Goodlife Good & Worthy
    Green Flash Extra Pale Ale
    Gigantic IPA
    Reverend Nat's Ginger Cider
    Three Creeks 5 Pine Porter
    Schooner Exact Imperial Porter
    Epic Hop Syndrome Lager
    Gigantic Rauchwiezen and the Bandit
    Bear Republic Racer 5 (cask)

Like OCanada said, Hair of the Dog isn't downtown but it's a stone's throw from the river on the east side. Both Belmont Station and The Horse Brass are maybe ten minutes from downtown, still in the heart of Portland on the east side.

Not sure this is a great conversation for me to have since I'm looking out my window at the Horse Brass as I type this and it's making my mouth water haha.
