  • I'm drinking Hemlock Beer. Why live another day? The news just came out that there was a typo in the USC sanctions decision and they are limited to 150 recruits each year rather than 15. They are signing everyone we want, even incoming cheerleaders.

Plus it's been fairly sunny out which means a big, big rain must be due.

Chip has been so depressed by the recruiting and pleasant weather that he's been risking life and limb daily in the hope of a terrible accident. Last week he went to Pamplona and instead of running away from the bulls tried to jump over their horns and on to their backs. His luck was lousy and all he got was a wild ride.

Then he and Gary Campbell went skydiving and Chip forgot to put on his chute. He landed in Crater Lake unharmed but more depressed than ever.

Next he skied down Everest with Alioti wearing hockey skates rather than skis. No luck at all. He was saved by a Tibetan Lama who promptly anointed Kelly as the future Dalai Lama, confusing his babyish face and general roundness with early childhood. The same thing nearly happened to Hubert Humphrey, Winston Churchill and Newt Gingrich and did in fact happen to John Belushi and John Candy. Look what happened to them! No good can come from this.

Next up is a car race at Le Mans. Kelly and Helfrich are driving vintage Ferrari's. Kelly is driving blindfolded, a first. We'll see what happens.

Not a big fan of the international beer fest. I will however be at the brewers festival next weekend.

Hoping to win their contest. It's fun, but really not worth it otherwise. Paying $6 just to get their tiny plastic mug so you can pay $5 for 10oz beers is a bit of a ripoff. If you do go and don't mind sharing the plastic mug, there's no point in each person paying for one.

No, not really at all. What's the point of paying out the ass for beer you can buy at the gas station?

No, it's just too expensive. I do love Oregon beer, but I will try almost any beer.

  • Went to a new brewery in Salem called Santiam Brewing. They have a coconut stout that is very good, the best I have tried thus far. Their other beers were so so. Not bad but not phenomenal.

If you are ever in Salem it's worth checking them out. They are located in a fairly small place right off of McGilchrist and have a small ”tasting room” that is basically a little bar in the brewery. The owners are really accommodating and gladly walk you through the brewery and explain the brewing process.

I just heard about that place. Steve Michaud (you probably know him) went there. I am going to the beer festival tomorrow.
I went out to Bend last Thursday and stopped at GoodLife and Boneyard. Ah sweet Boneyard...

  • I had a Hoppeditz Doppelsticke Alt from Freigeist Bierkultur last night. I'm not usually one to drink many imports but this one came highly recommended from the guys at Main Brew in Hillsboro and man were they right. If you like smoky, malty beers with just the perfect balance of hops then this is definitely worth a try. I'm gonna have to try and get back over there before they're all sold out and pick me up a few more. One of the top beers I've had in the last few months.

Right now I'm sipping on the Wild Blonde from Flat Tail (a Corvallis Brewery). It's good...not great. Nice and light and refreshing on a hot summer's day but it certainly isn't a "knock me out of my chair" type of beer that I'd seek out again....maybe that's why it's called a Wild Blonde. It's like one of those girls you just gotta try once as a summer fling to whet the appetite but nothing you'd want to settle down with and have seconds of. Would like to try some others from Flat Tail though, however.

Hoping to make it down to the Brew Fest tomorrow for a few hours.

  • I had to bribe a liquor store in DC to talk to a distributor to get a case of Black Butte Porter sent to DC. Thankfully there are plenty of Rogue 22s around ... I am a big fan of Mogul Madness. Damn I miss Oregon!!!!!!

Black Butte and Mirror Pond just arrived in Calgary, Alberta. Not sure the next time I'll be there, but hopefully they will get at least a limited supply of The Abyss when it is released. Maybe I can get my relatives who live there to ship me a couple bottles.

Ya Rogue is probably the most widely distributed Oregon brewery, and to be honest my main introduction to craft beer. I've had their Brutal Bitter, Juniper Pale, Mogul Madness, Dead Guy, Double Dead Guy, Oregamsic Ale, Yellow Snow IPA, and Chipotle Ale, haven't seen Shakespeare Stout here yet or I would have tried that as well.

Debating calling my sister to see if she can pick me up a 6-pack of this while she's in "the big city". Well big for Saskatchewan, its only about 200,000.

Nice! Yeah Steve was actually just leaving when I got there.

He's the one that convinced me to try Fort George's 1811 lager. I usually steer away from lagers but it's nice and hoppy. More balanced than Vortex, in my opinion.

  • Wookie Jack by Firestone. Living in Santa Barbara I have the pleasure of hitting up the tap room. Wookie on tap is very very good, a Black Rye IPA. Also the new Double DBA by them has like a mild scotch flavor and you could hardly taste the potency. Hazelnut Brown Nectar will always be my favorite brew to drink year round.

  • Taking a break from the dark stuff today. Unibroue's La Fin du Monde on deck. Seen as one of the best "non-traditional" tripels in North America, and something I can actually get any time. Massive malt body on this one, I'm sure some have had it.

You can ignore user, I don't think you can ignore/block topic. Does a beer thread offend you?
