Opening backfiring?

  • i really thought this event would help boost Oregons recruiting and i think it will in the long run but this year USC commits seem to be using it as the perfect recruiting grounds to sway other players. We really could have used thomas tyner here as he doesnt seem to be such a reserved guy.

Bringing these kids to Oregon is huge. It's very nice advantage for Oregon football. We have a few guys there which is better than some teams have, plus since the event is so close to Eugene, several of the best players in the country are going to make it down to Eugene.

  • IMO it's just as much an advantage for UW as is it is for us

i agree i just think this year we are in a battle with USC for key recruits but they have a bunch of players in these guys ear trying to sway them. i wouldnt worry so much if every kid wasnt commiting so early this year and we could get them to autzen on gameday.

  • here's your two options...

    1. USC dominates in recruiting because they have a critical advantage of local talent. There is no Opening, so many of the nation's top talent never even see's the state of Oregon, or associates Oregon with what has become one of if not the premier football clinic/combine for HS athletes. Thus many recruits never even get close to Oregon Football. Meanwhile USC recruits continue to recruit more talent in California, and at other HS football workshop / combines.

    2. USC dominates in recruiting because they have a critical advantage of local talent. There is the Opening, so many of the nation's top talent actually visit the state of Oregon, which they now associate with what has become one of if not the premier football clinic/combine for HS athletes. Many of these same athletes take an extra day to visit UO and at least check it out...an unnofficial visit that wouldn't happen otherwise, and at the very least spreads what Oregon has to offer to other PSA's back home who become intrigued by UO. Meanwhile USC recruits continue to recruit more talent in California, and at other HS football workshop / combines.

Tell me how option #1 is better than option 2.

People need to get a grip, USC is USC and always will be. If you want to compete with the big boys you have to COMPETE with them, not expect a Nike event to do the work for you. And yes, the Opening is paying dividends to UO with many athletes visiting and our recruits meeting other kids and recruiting them in the state of Oregon where they can experience the weather and compare it to back home.

Superficially, you may be correct. This event allows Nike to bring in kids from around the country. It gets them close enough to make a visit to either Eugene, or Seattle, a whole lot easier.

But I think your comment misses the bigger picture. These kids either know, or will learn, about the special connection between Nike/Knight and UO. An association is being built in their minds between Nike/Oregon and excellence: excellent gear, facilities, and training methods. It is also exposing these kids to summer weather in Oregon. All of that has the effect of overcoming objections and building the Oregon brand.

People need to be patient. Phil Knight didn't build Nike into a juggernaut overnight. He has been helping the Ducks build facilities and brand for 17 years now. We have come a very long way, and we aren't done, yet. The value of the Opening will build over time.

    I agree!

A lot can and will change from now until NSD. Heck I will say a lot will change from now until Nov. For example, coaching changes, teams not living up to the hype, Kids being kids, etc. I remember Cal was well represented at this event last year and we all know how things changed for them.

  • Some people need to chill.

The Opening is NOTHING but, GOOD for UO.

    Short term and Long term.

Many top recruits also have little brothers that end up being top recruits as well. Not to mention that quite frequently top prospects come from powerful football high schools that funnel college players out year after year.

Talk of The Opening, NIKE, and Oregon resonates for years at these schools and in these families, giving Oregon an earlier and earlier foot in the door, which is crucial sometimes in recruiting.

We won't win all of the recruiting. Not even close. The fact that a school in a small state like Oregon is even in the conversation with some of these kids is truly amazing.

Stop worrying and enjoy the ride.

    dustyduck

  • Was there a specific conversation your talking about? An article that says these USC guys are swayin recruits? Anything besides a gut feeling?

Oregon has 3 commits at this event too.

Just tired of the sky is falling crap. I guess it's unavoidable, but just seems to be goin strong lately, even though we've had a lot of commits recently.

WE JUST NEED TO KICK THEIR ASS A COUPLE TIMES THIS YEAR AND EVERYTHING WILL WORK OUT FINE. biggrin

  • Agree BigDucker,

This season is primed to put Oregon on a whole different level.

Oregon is ranked in the Top 5 to open the season.

SC is ranked #1 by a lot of polls.

So if Oregon beats the Trojans in LA during the regular season in November, which with our QB gaining experience and the Trojans having possible struggles with depth issues by then, that could very easily catapult the Ducks into the Top 2 in order to play for the BCS title.

That then potentially places the Ducks as the host to play the Trojans in Autzen Stadium for the conference championship. Beat them again (TWICE IN ONE SEASON!!, A season that had SC start out ranked #1) and the Ducks will be seen as an even more elite program than they currently are, regardless of what happens in the BCS title game.

This is a huge year for Oregon and it's our last opportunity before the BCS moves to a four game play-off.

    dustyduck

  • You sure won't be saying that it backfired when we have some great recruits make the trek to Eugene after The Opening...

  • USC will always beat us in recruiting and that's ok. Don't get so worked up about the recruiting battles.
Obviously CK puts more effort into background checks and its hard to argue with his results. I'm not worried at all.

Beating number 1 generally means that number 1 was 'overrated', rather than the winner being the new number 1. Last year, Oklahoma started the season as number i and yet it was LSU/Alabama playing for the title. Neither Texas Tech, Baylor nor Okie State took over the top spot after beating Oklahoma. Hypothetically, If(WHEN) UO(#5) beats USC(#1) in Los Angeles, I would expect the previous #2 & #3 to move into the top spots with UO becomming the new #3. A second win over USC leaving UO with a 13-0 record would probably do the job, depending on results in the Big-12 and Big-10. We all know that the SEC will get at least one of the two spots.

But uh, UO are now big time as well. USC has more tradition, history, and more kids in the backyard. But UO has all that new age change uniform, Nike background thing. Kids love that. Really tho, at the end of the day, it's all about how u do on the field with what u got. UO does very well with what they got and will get killer recruits btwn now and NSD. U'll lose a couple to us and we'll lose a couple to you. It all works out at the end and the top teams will continue to be the top teams as usual.
