Oregon Recruiting Manifesto: What Went Wrong

Part 2. This should spark some interesting debate. Don't stone me; cheers!

  • Blah. Was just truly unfortunate how the whole process played out. Kudos to Helf though for keeping all but one in the class intact and getting a head start on this year's recruiting. It's clear he and the staff disagreed with Chip's recruiting process.

  • I agree with 98% of what you wrote and as fans we are frustrated when the 5 stars come knocking and are turned away. But I am still going to jump ahead and say on-field performance basically blows the whole recruiting methods out of the water... our 3 stars are beating your 5 stars... Hard to argue 12-1 seasons. The measure of how Oregon does in the next a couple of years will be blamed on Helf's coaching rather than Chip's recruiting.

USC is like a german car, every piece that breaks is of the highest quality.

Our 3 stars WERE beating your 5 stars. Oregon is stacked now, they have a lot of 4 stars on the team now and a couple 5 as well.

And it's not like those teams were devoid of talent. They've been the 2nd most talented team in the conference (in terms of recruiting rankings) for the last three years.

  • I think the main things in terms of recruiting are 1 sustainability- almost every team in the PAC is recruiting more talent(especially UCLA, UW, Stanford), so we can't remain stagnant in our recruiting efforts. And 2 advancement- our goal is not to be the top of the PAC anymore. That was a stepping stone. Now we're looking for NCAA trophy/banners. If you get complacent, you get left behind and with Helf at the helm, I think we're aiming to topple the big boys of the south and tOSU, FSU, etc. it's manifest destiny for the Ducks and we're taking over the nation from coast to the other.

  • I stopped reading half way through....................Chip made some mistakes but everyone seems to forget that he brought in the best recruiting classes we ever had.............Whats the quote? can't argue with success? I guess that doesn't apply to a spoiled fan base.

Ya, it was written with the help of DT members since I came to most of those conclusions through discussions on here.

Excellent use of the term "Manifest Destiny".
It takes a special mindset for a coach to enjoy recruiting. I couldn't do it-actually I do it for my firm but I don't have to visit the parents-yet. I'm sure that day is coming.

It doesn't take a spoiled fanbase or even a person with half a brain to realize this past recruiting class, while good, could have been far, far, better. You can't argue that not getting Vanderdoes, Luke, Mitchell, etc. is good for us. Unless hell freezes over and they all end up flameouts or something (unlikely), our class could've gone from very good to best ever spectacular, and the only reason it didn't is because of Chip.

Thanks Sheldon. I personally don't envy those coaches. I honestly don't see how a person can run a successful program on the field and juggle all the effort and man hours it takes to recruit 20-25 high school kids(out of thousands) to come to your school. It's beyond me how they are able to do this. There are only so many hours in the day and I don't envy them.

And the reason it was as good as it was is also because of chip.

and maybe you can use the other half of that brain to realize that although his approach did leave some misses out there, chip's approach was more successful than any other coach we have ever had on the recruiting trail. Chip recruited well and with the added benefit of a high character requirement we haven't had "an Urban issue" with his recruiting classes.

This is a valid point. The issue people take with what happened revolves around the reasons why Oregon missed on guys they did offer.

Fair enough. But Chip himself wasn't as much of a stalwart in recruiting as our system and our staff was. Chip pulled in very good classes no doubt, but this past year specifically, it could've been all-time good, maybe the best if Chip had put in the effort. He didn't. That's the issue.

Chip is the man!! I don't think any Oregon fan will argue the contrary. But with that said, I agree with you. We could've had a better recruiting class. This won't be popular, but Chips "we'll win with or without you" attitude made it hard to keep those guys interested. As Duck fans, as much as we KNOW we'll win with or without those guys, imagine if you were them and you always wanted to go to a particular scool.... If that HC didn't seem all that interested, you'd conclude UW, USC, UCLA, Zona, Stanford, Notre Dame, Texas, Bama, etc, all have great programs too..

  • Chip was a great coach, but there was something missing in recruiting. He did a good job with due diligence, and prevented major crap from happening. However, there are some guys we offered (Obviously meaning me liked them and their personality) that we missed out on. For what reason? Not sure about the reasons, but the consensus is that there was some amount of neglect. We slow played them too long, or were too busy doing other things. I don't know. But I'm glad things are looking up under Helf....Unless Helf can't get it done on the field :P
Personally, I'd rather have good recruiting classes, and great seasons.....than the other way around

  • The EV thing is a tough pill to swallow. But lets not forget Chip's recruitment of Arik Armstead. He was honest ("I may or may not be leaving"), straightforward with a simple no-frills meeting in the Armstead's living room. Sark meanwhile attempts his version of a road show with the whole UW staff in tow, rents a hotel conference room and serves up a sllck powerpoint presentation. UW's staff left town with their collective tails tucked between their legs.
