Oregon Recruiting Manifesto: What Went Wrong

  • wisequacker said...

The EV thing is a tough pill to swallow. But lets not forget Chip's recruitment of Arik Armstead. He was honest ("I may or may not be leaving"), straightforward with a simple no-frills meeting in the Armstead's living room. Sark meanwhile attempts his version of a road show with the whole UW staff in tow, rents a hotel conference room and serves up a sllck powerpoint presentation. UW's staff left town with their collective tails tucked between their legs.

Good points wisequacker. I really think the way he handled the Armsteads was the right approach for the Armsteads, but that isn't always what works best for every kid, and every family, in every situation.

And the reason it was as good as it was is also because of chip.

This is not true. Chip may have created the conditions and environment that shaped the recruiting success, but he left the class languishing, bolted and Helfrich and staff had to save the class. Chip may forever be Oregon's best coach, but recruiting 2013 was not his finest moment. Nobody, not even Chip, was perfect.

Chips approach was designed to weed out any but the most seriously interested, those who really, really wanted to be ducks. Does it mean we missed on some good guys(both as athletes and students)yes it obviously did.

  • One thing which we may have not touched on in this piece is the limited time negative recruiting. Chip leaving for the league and possible pending sanctions didn't help our cause.

This is true. But, as had been pointed out several times, the biggest thing that didn't help our cause was starting our process with recruits too late and not pursuing the guys we wanted aggressively enough. The guys that have been brought up that we missed on wanted to get more interest from Oregon and likely would have come here despite the pending sanctions and coaching uncertainty.

Good summary Ill. As you have said before, "more relationships, and start earlier." It looks like the current staff is doing this. Hopefully Helf will be able to demonstrate on field results similar to Chip, then we will have the best of both worlds.

  • Everyone is kind of blaming Chip for Vanderdoes, but I put most of the blame on Azzinaro and Aliotta. Like Aliotta said Chip pretty much leaves them alone to do their own thing. Azzinaro is the one who really hated recruiting. Great coach but terrible recruiter. IMO, If Chip didn’t step in, Armstead and Buckner would never have been Ducks. Hopefully Aiken has more game in the recruiting end.
Great article by the way ill. +1

Well Chip could've stepped in on EV like he did with Armstead...but he didn't.

I think Chip left in maybe the best circunstances for us, (he left us a solid recruting class and a loaded team), but I think all year he was leaning more toward going to the NFL than staying in college, and thats why recruiting seemed so odd at times.

Well of course. He had one foot out the door. The team still finishing 12-1 is a testament to how damn good of a coach he is, but unfortunately the recruiting suffered.

I think he probably recruited the guys he wanted the most aggressively, it's just that he didn't recruit the second and third options for each scholarship spot aggressively at all. A lot of these guys (second and third choices) were still four and five star guys. Chip didn't put a lot of effort into wooing these guys. That was the major problem IMO.

Vandergate is an example, among others. EV didn't fit perfectly into Chip's system because he didn't really have a true position in this 4-3 defense. So Chip was kind of milquetost on him, and was just like, whatevs, go check out some other teams and get back to us. If you want to beg and plead then maaaaybe we'll consider you again.
