Oregon no match for Auburn?

  • I would have cam pretend that he is a running back and run wildcat about 15-20 times in a row to set the pace. 4+ yards at a time would eventually lead to a missed tackle.
If he throws he might want to throw away from #13 and #20.

  • If I where to game plan I wouldn't run it, I would tell Cam everytime Pleasant is 1 on 1 with a WR throw it to him immediately. As much as I like Eddie, his coverage skills are lacking, and if you make a bad throw he will drop it anyways. Once you do that a few times UO would be forced to help him out opening up other plays.

That is why I think we should kind of do what Cal did to us, and had have Pleasant spy Newton the whole game.... He is fast enough to catch Newton and he can tackle.... if everyone else in the Defensive Backfield can stay with there assignments(Cliff Harris against Arizona) and let Pleasant play spy I think we have the players to control Newton.... I don't think you can completely stop him but I do think we should force him into putting the ball in other peoples hands.

  • I really like the spy idea, but I would alternate linebackers on him to keep him guessing. Lokombo, Kaddu, Paisinger, Matthews, Clay all would be able to use angles to keep him bottled up while still helping out with underneath routes.

  • I have enjoyed reading Oregon's take on the BIG GAME. Being an Auburn Fan, I have a great deal of respect for football played in the PAC 10. I remember all too well a few years ago when Auburn was highly ranked and So. Cal whipped our butts two straight years !! I was also wishing for an Oregon loss this year in order to play Boise St. or TCU. All we have heard this year from ESPN is how GREAT these 2 non-bcs teams are !!! Frankly, Oregon's offense scars me to death. Its like looking into a mirror and seeing Auburn playing itself. I think that the last team with the ball wins !!

  • Remember in 2001 when we were gonna get "bulldozed" by Colorado? I love that Oregon is the Underdog in this game!

  • I wouldn't recommend the spy. Several teams have tried it (South Carolina on Saturday is the latest), and it hasn't worked too well. Too often it eaves you defending with only 10 players, as one is basically in no mans land just waiting in case Cam runs. Several pass plays had a linebacker standing there doing nothing just in case Cam ran. So SC only rushed 3, which gave Cam plenty of time to pick someone out. You give a good QB 5 to 10 seconds, he will find someone.

Well if he doesn't run, then the back seven is down a man. With the increased use of the tight end or H-back in our passing game, using that guy to spy can make it difficult to cover everyone.

Another thing that Malzahn is great at is using misdirection. If that spy is too focused on Cam, he's more susceptible to biting on fakes and misdirection where he thanks Cam could be running (since it's his responsibility to contain him). If you have someone who's out of position, it opens things a little more for long runs by McCalebb, which he's had a lot of this year (8.7 yards per carry).

My guess is that if Kelly studies the film of how a spy worked out, he'll probably stay away from it. Alabama, by far, had the most success stopping the offense. In the first half, they were good at defending the run both inside on power runs, and on sweeps (they closed out to the sideline very well.....great containment and gap control).

However, the adjustment was to throw down field more, which proved to be successful in big play scores, but it also loosened up the running lanes a bit.

I think the best bet is to just try to play it straight up as best you can. Nothing tricky. Just know that misdirection and distracting formations are coming, and you just have to be disciplined and play your responsibility.

  • That is why I would spy with the strong safety and not a linebacker. In our case we are fortunate that our strong safety used to be a linebacker. I don't want to mess with the linebacker reads keep them using the same reads they are currently assigned and have the strong safety spy. Keeps the front seven still working together and the linebackers would still have the TE/HB.

  • I think I speak for most Auburn folks in that we have the utmost respect for the Ducks and expect a very good game with no outcome ensured.

What up David G at TP in Springfield......you paying attention?

    lthompson

  • If you want to talk about game planing for Cam, I don't think we use a spy or anything like that. I think we try to confuse him mix things up every play and never let him get a good read on what we are doing. I really believe that is how you stop Cam.

  • Im not gonna take any shots at Cam, Cecil, Chizek or Malzahn.

I'll just say this. It will be settled on the field on January 10th.

For all the ones bashing Oregon and the PAC-10, I suggest you watch football and get educated about the game before you run your mouth.

  • Game plan should be simple for Auburn offensively, be more physical and use your size. If you try to out finesse us you will lose. With that being said, I expect we will gameplan for that, so you will have to beat us throwing the ball down the field and hope Cliff gets over aggressive.

  • Who's going to the game? Quick show of hands..... the stadium has a gigantic parking lot and a big grassy field for tail-gating we could have a "247Sports" team site party with Aubbie and Duck players alike.

I have to agree with Jadennis. The numbers, and SOS, are pretty compelling. Just make sure the trophy is clean before we hand it over. Would you like it with a nice Oregon Pinot Noir or would a terrific microbrew do?

I am still shocked we are here. I think this is not as strong a team as 2007 but they made it due to coaching, execution, and lack of large number of injuries. If you look back at recruiting 3-4 years ago you can say Chip has done a lot with a moderately talented crew. I know Auburn had higher ranked classes and I do think overall they have a more talented team. As we saw in the Rose Bowl last year, in games like this, talent often wins out.

However, Chip has improved recruiting, and I think the future will bring even better teams for Oregon and its fans.

I'm think your correct on this one TF. Wish it was not true, but I have been looking at the SOS for the last 4 weeks, and Auburn does have the edge.

That is exactly what I think as well, mirror image except for two exceptions, we do not have Cam Newton, and I think we are faster in getting plays off than Auburn. When we run the speed offense, we average around 13.5 seconds between plays. But that does not work unless we can sustain drives.

  • You throwing in the towel, dk?

    glc0stanza

  • Nope glc, just trying to be realistic. I also think that we can win, but the key is sustaining drives IMO. And you do have to admit that we do not have a Cam Newton, we do have two very good RB's in LMJ and Barner, which match up pretty close to their two RBs, we do have Maehl, which matches up with well with their featured WR. The one thing we have not seen is whether DT can match up with Cam Newton. If CK takes off the gloves on DT, then we will see. DT can throw, and occaisionally run, but nothing like Cam Newtons running ability. We have a very good O Line, but I do not know how they match up to Nick Fairley and Co. I do think Auburn will be surprised how well the O Line does though. On defense we are strong in LBs and secondary, but not sure about our D Line. We have not played a team as strong as Auburn, with the exception of Stanford, who has an exceptional O Line and the D handled them fairly well. I'm just saying based upon my inadequate knowledge the matchup comes down to Cam Newton's performance and how we handle it.

  • What are the names of your starting offensive lineman and defensive lineman. I tried to find lineups but couldn't find anything but rosters.

  • Though I too have great respect for our opponents, I don't think Auburn has played any team close to our speed and tempo. I think auburn will score their fair share of points and I think the DUCKS will also. I also think our speed on defense will not allow Cam to sit in the pocket. I really like N.A. play calling on defense, blitz packages, dropping lineman back in coverage etc. Our linebackers are as fast as most opponents runningbacks which gives us alot of schemes to choose from. I agree with JHOP that our offense will keep a big defensive line neutral due to the fact that we are not a run up the middle offense. Look at when we played USC, big lineman did nothing for them. Fairly is a great player, but we'll see how great his conditioning is when he plays the Ducks. Will he have too sub out alot? We shall see!! : )

we basically use most of our DL roster anyway, but our rotation I believe is 8 guys (Turner, Keliikipi, Hart, Bair, Heimuli, Jordan, Rowe, I feel badly I'm missing at least one here I think)
Same for our OL (Holmes, Asper, York, Kaiser, Cody, Clanton, Benyard, Golpashin, Weems, Armstrong)

Seems like a lot, but with our tempo, the bodies are critical!

  • I desperately need tickets. Already have hotel booked, and can get decent airfare flying into Tuscon, but my DAF order isn't high enough to afford me a ticket allotment and I don't feel like paying $1200 per ticket in addition to hotel and airfare. Missing this game would suck. Bad.

  • If you don't get the tickets, DSA will have a tent for all Duck fans, with TV. You might want to check with Ducks39 about it on DSA. Not the same but better than nothing.

Hey Justin, It looks like I am going to be driving my RV down so if there is a way we can get a spot there for it I would be more than happy to let that be a home base. I have a huge lighted ball that looks like a moon I put 18' in the air so it would be easy to find.
