Oregon team and recruiting Q&A

  • jmoser23 said...

What kind of impact should we expect from Erik Dargan this year? Any chance he could step into a 'starting' role? I like both Patterson and Jackson a lot, but I get this feeling that Dargan could be a TJ Ward clone.

My feel is that he'll be a predominant factor on special teams a la Brian Jackson the last couple of seasons while also being part of the rotation in the secondary. Unless there's an injury or he really blows the coaches away in August, I think this is what to expect out of Dargan this season.

If you had to pick one young player on offense and defense who might surprise with his contribution this year, who would you pick? I know it's early to pick dark horses because these rumors usually start trickling out during fall camp, so I won't hold you too anything. Just curious.

I think the Addison news from a few weeks ago has let that one out of the bag so I won't go there on offense.

I think Keanon Lowe might surprise people a little bit this coming season. Everyone is focused on the trio of Blackmon, Kelley, and Sumler along with incoming recruits but Lowe seemed to have the "light" come on late last season and became a special teams warrior.

I think he will do the same all year this coming year as well as getting onto the field on offense and making a few plays. People need to remember he was one of the state's fastest players on the track as a SO/JR/SR and was a pretty elite receiver as a JR before having perhaps one of the best years ever at running back as a senior at Jesuit.

On defense I am going to go with Taylor Hart. He is pretty well known among Oregon circles but I think Hart's progression from rotation player to starter to star player happens this fall. He's gotten better every year at Oregon and has been one of the most reliable players the past two seasons. With the focus on Dion Jordan I think Hart will see the most impact from it.

  • What Top 100 guys are out there that you would consider realistic gets for the Ducks?

This. I could see Blackmon and Kelley possibly working their way in to "top 3" status, but Huff, Vaughn, and Hawkins would be my bets as well. Addison could very get some serious run backing up DAT in that hybrid RB/WR role.

Right I agree with Crhis that Blackmon and Kelley could find themselves into that top three group but it's been awhile since we've seen not one but two freshmen (redshirt or not) become key cogs at receiver for the Ducks. Add in the physical nature they have to play with and I think these two will have spurts where they look amazing and other games where they aren't a major factor.

On offense, aside from an obvious guy like Mariota, I think guys like Byron Marshall, Devon Blackmon, Evan Baylis, and James Euscher could be candidates for breakout seasons. Marshall mostly because of pure need, but word is Blackmon, Baylis, and Euscher have all made dramatic improvements and could be ready to contribute immediately this fall.

On defense, I've been hearing great things about Anthony Wallace and Ifo Ekpre-Olomu. Ifo in particular could have the kind of season that really sets him apart from the other defensive backs (excluding John Boyett).

We are hearing alot now about Adams and Bostwick (more so Bostwick) as a result of EV going to sc. Is Oregon really in the mix for either of those 2? In your opinions, what are our chances for these 2? And are there any other dt prospects that may come into Oregon's radar?

Bostwick is a much more realistic option than Adams right now, in my opinion. With Bostwick, it's really going to come down not only to the coaches feeling comfortable offering him (obviously), but how he enjoys an official visit to Eugene this fall when the weather won't even compare to what he's been experiencing in Florida. More than that, Bostwick has developed a very strong bond with the Miami coaches and that, coupled with a serious distance factor, could be a lot for Oregon to overcome.

Outside of Bostwick, keep an eye on a couple of the names that we've discussed here: Wyatt Teller and Abens Cajuste. Like Bostwick, Teller could be a tough pull for the Ducks all the way from Virginia, but Cajuste could be a nice bridge between the haul of defensive linemen the Ducks landed last recruiting cycle and the one they perhaps hope to sign in 2014.

  • Redfield to SC just happened. What are the odds we make more of a push for Goodman now?

    pdxshogun

  • I read somewhere that Max Redfield didn't participate in any big name summer events this year because he wanted to focus on his high school team, staying in the weight room everyday, and working on winning a state title. Hearing that made me think he is a Oregon type of player, not into the accolades just wants to play and win. I know all of the domino's are falling into place at SC and he is buddies with a lot of commits, But do you see this being in ways similar to DAT? Heading up north after being at a typical SC feeding factory.. To me he is the most interesting target at this point, could be a huge game changer in the secondary

  • BTW I feel very strongly B.J. Kelley has a big year on offense for Oregon, ahead of Vaughan.

That IMO opens the door for Oregon to become maybe THE big-time player now for the two Robinson twins, who are four-star recruits for you star gazers.

Not including guys who are currently committed elsewhere at the moment, I think Oregon has a legitimate shot at the following:

Ricky Seals-Jones (needs an offer and needs to visit)
    Tahaan Goodman
    Alvin Kamara
    James Quick

    ChrisCourtney

  • Are you guys aware of special chemistry between the receivers and different QBs? What I'm asking is if Bennett becomes the QB if there is a receiver or two that would get more looks and vice versa.

With Redfield "off the board" I think you could definitely see Oregon ramp up their efforts for guys like Goodman, the Robinson twins, and perhaps even Brandon Arnold.

  • Can Colt Lyerla become a consistent force this year? Is there any word out there? If I remember right I heard that inconsistency was a problem, although it tends to be for younger players. If he can be then he'll obviously draw attention to the middle of the field, and with mariota pulling the strings i think this offense could look like a faster version of DD's senior year. It SEEMS like the talent is there anyways

I don't see this turning in to a DAT situation, in fact, I'm not sure we'll ever see something quite like what happened with DAT for a very long time. DAT was a "lock" for USC really since he started fielding recruiting letters. Redfield has been an SC lean, but has also held Oregon in very high regard publicly.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: Would I be shocked if Redfield de-committed? No. Do I expect him to waver or perhaps de-commit? No.

Not that I'm aware of, but it wouldn't surprise me. Every QB has a receiver that he's particularly fond of. I'm sure Bennett and Mariota have theirs, but it's difficult to say who.

  • Ricky Seals-Jones
    Tyrell Robinson
    Tyree Robinson
    Derrick Green
    Torrodney Prevot
    Taheem Goodman
    James Quick

All very very possible and all four-stars excluding RSJ who is a five-star. I think Oregon fans would be willing to "settle" for something along those lines....

That is the million dollar question at tight end this season. Lyerla was on #bosstatus for special teams last year and didn't have the pressure to have to be elite every game because of Paulson. Now with no Paulson and also the loss of White from injury there is some serious concerns and lack of depth at TE heading into this season.

Dont count out Evan Baylis however as Oregon coaches have tabbed him to be the smartest tight end they've had maybe ever at Oregon.

Chris pretty much hit the nail on the head here. Bennett seemed to have a very strong connection with Stanton and Kelley for the green team in the spring to me.

From what I've heard, that's all up Colt. He was obviously good enough last year to see the field and make an impact, but I'm curious to see how he responds with guys like Baylis and perhaps even Pharaoh Brown breathing down his neck. Last year, he played mostly because of need. This year isn't too much different, but he will be pushed.

  • How do you feel about the backup position to Dion Jordan? Do you guys feel Washington can handle it or might the staff look elsewhere, such as French if he can get ready? It seems like French would still be at least a year away.
