    If I could ask Coach Azz one thing it would be this...his recruiting philosophy about height and his perspective on leverage. I mean he clearly wants guys who are least 6'4 preferably taller, but shorter guys traditionally have a leverage advantage.

    I will never question Azz and his tactics, but its a proven fact that shorter defensive lineman have an advantage from the leverage standpoint. However, Chip says Azz is one of the best defensive lineman coaches in the country and maybe there is something he has found that allows these guys to use their height to advantage from a leverage standpoint. My first guess would be their long arms having the ability to drive away and shed the blocker as well as being able to bat down balls as they cross the line of scrimmage.

    Its almost like the movie Moneyball. Maybe Azz has found a way to target recruits that others have dismissed purely because they don't fit a stereotypical mold of defensive lineman.

    However, need only look at what a Freeney can do at the next level to see that that body type does have it's advantages (assuming speed and power).

    Height on the edges isnt a new concept by any means....its the interior linemen that we are recruiting that are so tall that is certainly interesting. That is where Azz has a different strategy compared to so many others.

  • Yup, I don't think leverage is the right word. A lower center of gravity (not higher) gives an advantage--if you are talking about two bulldozers going head to head. It would seem that Coach Azz wants power (speed is a key component of power) and athleticism. Long arms to shed blocks, nimble bodies to stunt, etc. And most importantly, waves of guys in tip top physical condition. We need lots of athletes who can give 100% on every snap and then sprint back onto the field after the offense scores in under 2 minutes. Our D-line might get pushed back in the 1st half to an extent, but they will dominate the 2nd half of the game and the 2nd half of the season. The Defense is being built to complement the offense perfectly.

  • I love it. The big, tall, & athletic frames allow Rad and his staff develop them the way they want to. We've only seen this for a few years, and I think it's only going to get better and better. Take a look at our depth chart (not a commentary on who i think is starting or not), I see a lot of speed AND size! I for one am REALLY excited to see this group with our LB's & DB's.

    Defensive End:
    *Sr - Dion Jordan 6'7" 245 lbs.
    *RFr - Koa Ka'ai 6'4" 245 lbs.
    *RSo - Tony Washington 6'4" 265 lbs.
    *PSA - Deforrest Buckner 6'7" 240 lbs.

    From a technique standpoint it's easier for a shorter DL to gain leverage, but from a power standpoint, the more bend you have the more leverage you can apply. It's simply a more difficult matter for these tall DL to get low enough. Also, as a mainly 2 gap defense, what you said about about reach makes sense. We want players with range on the DL. It's yet another example of a commitment to a system. It may not be the best way of doing things, but it's damn well our way and they'll do it full bore.

  • Who was the tallest college football player ever? The heaviest?

    There can't have been too many bigger than Stetzon Bair who is measured at 6' 9" on some sites. We'll know for sure if he is significantly taller than Aric Armstead who seems to be 6' 8" everywhere, an oddity, since these guys seem to shrink, grow and shrink again daily.

  • We should sub Mana Grieg for Kyle Long, and vice versa, on every other play just to get into the opposing players head a bit. It's bound to work, kinda like putting a knuckle baller into the rotation between Nolan Ryan and Randy Johnson.

  • Also having the tall DLmen can obstruct a QB's vision downfield. I'm sure there's numerous reasons why Azz prefers the bigger big uglies.
