Only two excuses can be used to extend this window: pregnancy or attending a church mission. Once you are enrolled full time in a secondary institution of learning, that 5-year clock begins ticking, and it doesn't stop if you take a quarter/semester off.
thus, if he graduated in '09 and also enrolled in college that year, next year would be his fourth year out of school and so he would have one final year of eligibility remaining after the fall.
