Skepticism of Armstead and Oregon Basketball

  • Don't get me wrong. I'm absolutely thrilled that Arik has verbally committed to Oregon, and that they only thing left for him to do is sign his name on the dotted line, but I'm growing skeptical of how playing basketball at Oregon is going to affect his football game, and vice versa.

Right now, he is 6'8'' and 285lbs. What I am guessing is that Coach Altman will want him to drop a few pounds so that he'll be able to play more effectively in the up-tempo transition game that he has started to install in the program, as well as the full-court press that Oregon uses occasionally.

But what will Coach Azz think of him slimming down? I know that Coach Azz wants to use Arik as a DE, and I also know that for being 285 pounds, Arik is said to be quite the athlete.

I'm just wondering if we're going to see some sort of controversy over what each coach wants out of him, and if that's going to hamper his success both on the football field, and the basketball court.

  • With the Ducks always playing deep in the bowl season I think Oregon will use AA a big bruiser to come off the bench. The guy is obviously quick and athletic despite his size but he could be a nice pair of fresh legs and create some matchup issues for our opponents.

No Arik said that he would play DE instead od DT because he wasn't going to gain to much more weight. He's like 6'8 280 now, he probably gets to 290 maximum... Football will come first

IMO, I think that you bring up a good point, but for his size the kid can move & I don't think that Altman will have any problems finding a place for him on the hardwood. He's extremely dedicated to his team & will put forth 110% at all times....I read a great article today after the announcement in the Sacramento Bee that was talking about how he did some damage to his rotator cuff in the first qtr of the first game, & refused to sit at any point during the season & played through it because he didn't wanna let his team down. He's a great asset not only in size, but as a leading example of work ethic, team work, & will be a great leader. Just my .02....GOOOO DUCKS!!!

  • I'm sure this has all been thought about, discussed and agree'd to by both the football side, basketball side, and Armstead's before any decision was made.

Imo, this is a non issue.

  • I will agree that it is probably not optimal in order to maximize his potential in football. But if the kid's got the talent and desire to play both, more power to him.

By the way, Big Baby Glenn Davis is about 290 lbs. and plays for the Magic who get up and down the court. I think AA will be okay at or around his current weight.

  • The question I have, is should he be a OT, rather than DE. This could be a different thread, but I have seen some articles stating he is better suited for Tackle.

I know he is recruited as a DE, but can he be a better OT?

Depending on who you talk to.

Anwyay, if Chip and Altman both agree AA can play basketball, then I have no reservations about it whatsoever. Our coaches know way more.

  • I'm sure they already have! It was an integral part of his reqruitment.

  • AA - 6'8" 290ish
    Glenn Davis - 6'9" 289 PF LSU - 2006 SEC POY

Another angle - what if hoops makes him happier and he is 'that' good? Altman has proven to be a wizard with blending parts and making magic happen.

Either way hope he has a great time in Eugene!

  • If you watch his bball highlights glen davis is a closer comparison than shaq, when i watched it he reminded me more of dejuan blair or joevan catron only his handles arent at joevams level but he has a better shooting stroke at 18 than joevan had. He doesnt have great lift but knows how to use his size to create space. Oregon could play a front line of 6' 11" 250 lbs tony woods at C 6' 8" 290 lb PF AA and 6' 6" 225 lb SF carlos emory. Not many college teams have that kind of hieght and beef down low. Plus austin kuemper and chris larson who are redshirting and hopefully anthony bennet *knock on wood*
