Scarbinsky: Can't enjoy this remarkable run by Alabama and Auburn? Move to Georgia

Is there any doubt this is the greatest football state in the union?

  • Matt,
This kind of (not really) touched on something that I have been talking with a friend about, and I'm curious about your thoughts.

Ivan Maisel has talked about it before how the loss of jobs in the midwest over the past 30 years has really influenced the college recruiting game. He stated he didnt want to make the argument about race but it definitely played a part. Specifically that a lot of families migrated to the south due to the economy, and that is what changed the college football landscape to the south being so powerful. He then went on to say something jokingly like "people in the south don't leave, I may be the only person to leave the state of Alabama and not come back."

What are your thoughts about this?

  • Economy is obvious a hot topic, I think the impact has to do with kid's staying closer because they can't afford to take unofficial visits as much anymore and parents can't afford to fly to see games like we could in the "thriving" years. Just an observation, but I'm betting the amount of kids' that stay closer to home is at an all-time high.

  • Ok, what do you think about the argument that due to factory closings and people moving south, the SEC has more homegrown talent, especially when compared to the Big-10?

  • maybe I'm bringing up an elephant in the room here, but I think a large majority of the reason is education...and of course with less money comes lower quality education from the ground up! I believe I'm correct in saying that Alabama may have the poorest rated education system in the counrty. Should you expand the boundaries, I'm betting mississippi, louisiana, arkansas etc. aren't far behind (or ahead for that matter).

  • Amazing....15 pages of comments before anyone even mentions that there's another team involved in the Championship Game...and then it's only to dismiss us as potential game for hunters.

Incredible. And they wonder why we don't care for their attitude?

  • Kevin's a local writer for the Bham News and usually pretty fair. On the economic issue, for over a decade the Mid-West and NE have lost jobs and people to the Sunbelt States, Honda, Mercedes, Hyundai etc are Southern Companies now. My college room mate played for a school in Mentor OH that was known as Little OSU and had 1300 in the Senior class. Last I heard from him the school is being shutdown. It has to affect the quality and quantity of prospective players. Check out the top 25 teams and find one that doesn't have players from Fl, TX, or GA. You won't. Look at your own backfield.

  • I agree SOD . . . in less than 24 hours we went from earning a spot in the National Championship Game to not worthy with predictions that we'll lose by at least 3 scores. We didn't even get a chance to enjoy what we had accomplished this year before Auburn was crowned champion. I guess the seven in my family who are going to Glendale could save a whole lot of money and disappointment by just staying home. And to think this is just week 1 of what looks to be a five-week coronation. This feels a bit like the way we were treated by the media and Colorado fans leading up to the Fiesta Bowl and we know how that turned out.

  • IMO Darron Thomas will have to throw the ball downfield more than we have seen to stretch the field and win this game

    zonklin

  • Fortunately, Zonklin, Auburn's pass defense makes it easier than it usually is.

Hey Matt and other Ducks hope all is well for everyone over there. I am a Auburn fan, but I am a realistic one and I also have class. I wouldn't pay too much attention or worry about Scarbinsky. He's not really even respected in Alabama. I hate that most of you are having to hear garbage online and on tv, but a lot of us(realistic ones) in Alabama are worried about the game. I am very worried about the speed of your team, offense and defense. If we want to slow you guys down at all, we have got to be able to tackle in open space well. There's no doubt in my mind that your overall team speed is better than ours. I think we have a slight advantage on the offensive and defensive line. I'm not sure about your place kicker, but we have a real good one. I know that you guys are extremely better in the punt and punt return game, which punt return game goes back to speed. We both play extremely well in the 4th quarter. I am very much looking forward to the game which I hope and expect to be a great one, as well as meeting some of your fans.

Thanks for coming over to the site guys and sharing your input. It's nice to see that their are classy Auburn fans out there, and I'm sure you guys are saying the same about Ducks fanslol

19auburn49 Thanks for commenting on my question. It's true, besides Alston, all of our backs are from Texas. I just found it really interesting how manufacturing economics have impacted college recruiting so heavily.

  • Barner is from California. But the rest of the backs are from TX and NC.

  • I wouldn't take Scarbinsky's column too seriously. He's preaching to his choir. Anybody who watches more than just their team or their conference knows that this title game is going to pit, I think, to very evenly-matched teams who play fast, physical football.

I think if the conference championship game had been closer, the Ducks would still be #1 in the human polls and would be the media favorites. Our game had a lot of hype and we are getting a lot of credit (way too much, IMO) for badly beating a Spurrier coached team that looked nothing like the UF teams he fielded in the 90's.
