My thoughts on the recent departures of both freshmen guards Bruce Barron and Jabari Brown.

  • Thanks Matt. I couldn't have said it better.

From the start I didn't have a good feeling about Brown at Oregon. Of course I'm not that close to the program, but from outside appearances it never looked like Brown was comfortable.

I like what Altman is building in Eugene and it will only get better. As a long time fan I too only want players who want to be here. So when a Kevin Love spurns his father's alma mater for a one and done at UCLA I say it is no big deal.

    Go Ducks!

The talent is already up under Coach Altman, but with Ashaolu and Woods only have 1/2 years, the departure of Brown, and the quagmire that is the Ernie Kent unbalanced recruiting classes, we are definitely in a rebuilding mode. It could be another 3-4 years before we are seeing the real product that Altman can produce.

I can offer up a whole different potential reason why these two players transferred. Let me preface this by first stating that I do not know for a fact that the reason I am about to provide is why they transferred. All I can say is that someone close to the situation hypothesized the following reason based upon 1 fact.

The one fact? About 6 weeks ago Coach Altman advised his team that they were going to require the players to undergo random urine analysis tests.... in 6 weeks. Apparently, the coaching staff was aware of some of the players using drugs (I suspect dope), and instead of singling anyone out they decide to advise the whole team that they were going to start testing the players in 6 weeks.

By the person "close" to the situation's calculations, the 6 week mark is nearly upon them. He hypothesizes that these young kids left before they could be tested and caught - hence tarnishing their early careers. He also said neither one was upset with minutes as the season had only just begun; and that neither were "me" type players.

Again, please understand there is no proof that this is 100 percent accurate, except for the random UA and suspicion from the coaching staff about possible drug use.

Very interesting if true. We will probably never know for sure, but does sound possible.

i applaud Altman for doing that, if thats the case! I dont have a problem with him doing random drug tests at all! on a side note,, last season when creighton was in town, a aquaintance of mine, i know for a fact ( i seen the txts ) sold one of the starters for creighton some pot, he even went and picked him up at the valley river Inn, and they hung out from like 12-4 in the morning, then the player snuck back in his room after smoking and partying with him.... this kid i know has a friend that goes to creighton so he called this kid up to see if he could hook this player up while he was out here.
Most jobs you gotta take a drug test to get it, and alot do random drug tests, so i dont see any difference with this, playing basketball for the UofO is their job,,, kudos to Altman!!!
