It was worse last season actually. The "sky is falling" posters were going nuts during the Cal-gang crap. As for the original post, I 100 percent agree. We've picked up some elite core pieces for the future, and the Oregon coaching staff is still in on a number of great prospects.

The Cal-Gang did take it's toll, but there was less bickering and gripping among the members.

  • I think it is simple math. In the "old" days when we mostly had 2 and 3 star recruits, no one else wanted them that bad. Anytime we have a 4 or 5 star, everyone is going to be going after them. So what do you want 2 and 3 stars with no drama or 4 and 5 stars that will always come with everyone else going after them too?

Disagree, last year Cal-Gang & USC-loss was insufferable. Even JHop had to jump in.

We'll see, free memberships the month before signing day = Molotov Cocktail.

This. Just wait, the wheels haven't even fallen off yet.

No, but with all the hand wringers the trailer has fallen off the hitch and its sparking down the freeway.

  • Stars don't mean that much to our coaches - they recognize talent and can really develop players. Just got a verbal from an "unstirred" kid from the East Coast. I think a lot of people on this board are way too influenced by the star rating. I would rather have a 15-20 recruiting class and end up TOP 5, than have a Top 5 recruiting class and end up with 3-4 losses... I think what is so great about our coaches is that they can really recognize undeveloped talent and especially find those kids that fit into our offense and defense.

  • Why is it the coaches fault if a kid decides to go elsewhere?
How is it that we cry when a surprise unranked OL is offered and commits and jump for joy when an unranked DL is offered?
Do we know how long we have been in contact with said OL commit?
Just because jhop and crew didn't know about him does it mean the coaches rushed to judge and offer him out of paranoia?
I don't mind different opinions, but lets all think rationally before we post-k?

ps M.Adams still wants to visit?!?
    Vanderdoes looking around?!?
Its gonna be a long few weeks till signing day........

  • The Free promo subs have already lapsed so it's just the 'hard commits' here at DuckTerritory now.

Like Chip Kelly, we want people who want to be here. #PostTheDay

  • Depending on what you count as a whiff. No question for as highly ranked as our program has become, the recruiting seems a bit weak this year. We have two months to change this but at many positions, we continue to struggle in recruiting. I get it, it's Eugene, our number of D1 HS kids is low, etc. I think I have first hand knowledge that we are not as agressive in recruiting as many others. Our coaches are all real vetrans but not the young agressive recruiters and Chip (who is by far our best recruiter) has a different approach. He aint kissing no ones butt.

Never should our recruiting be better and I don't think it is any better than it was the past 10 years. The exception is the 1 or 2 kids like DAT, LMJ, KB, MM, Hopefully Tyner that we are able to get.

Can't say we "whiff" on recruiting until we see what they bring to the program - (Lache anyone???), and compare that to the 2 or 3 stars that have turned out to be super stars...

    All the arguing aside...

I think there is a balance between trusting the coaches and being concerned that targets are going elsewhere. If the Ducks offer somebody....they want them. Sometimes things like grades will come up and disrupt things, but usually if they offer, they would like the kid to come to the U of O and play some football. Stars are irrelevant. The coaches do a great job of evaluating talent, and knowing who they want and don't want. Sometimes a 5* player will come by wanting to come here, but their attitude or their grades prevent them. I can understand why we wouldn't want to offer such a player.

However, I think its a problem when some top targets go elsewhere. Kids we have offered and told that we REALLY want and can use. It isn't a matter of not going after the right or wrong talent...its about not bringing in the kids they want. They are always going to be kids who like USC better, or UW better or Cal or UCLA etc etc. The list goes on. But Oregon is a very popular team, and lots of kids want to look at us. But what is missing? What is preventing the top recruits that the coaches want from coming here??

Its just a question more than a complaint for me. As I said, there is a balance. Be concerned, but not too concerned. Trust the coaches, but recognize they are human and can make mistakes.

This. Please post frequently. We need as many reasonable, logical people on this board as possible.

I honestly feel that negative recruiting is a big cause for some of the results thus far. These kids are being hammered with "Kelly is gone for sure and they likely won't have the same success once he's gone, etc." They're also getting hit with "likely sanctions" bit as well. Couple those 2 bazookas with a small class, low # of offers, and a staff that isn't into pleading and heavy salesmanship, well there you have it.

p.s. don't forget the "Oregon's system won't prepare you for the NFL" and "do you really want to practice and play at that pace?"

Good point; negative recruiting is probably taking its toll this year more than in the past.

    Back in Quack

  • We will always fight the fact that some kids think Oregon is in the middle of nowhere and other kids don't like small towns and still others now realize that to be a Duck you have to work hard and behave yourself - doesn't matter how much talent you have if you are not willing to work hard and behave. Some kids can't deal with that discipline and a lot of kids just don't want to work that hard and still others are swayed by "name brands" - USC, Alabama, Texas, etc. To some of these kids Oregon is an "unknown". But the bright side is that a lot of 7-10 year olds are growing up on Oregon football and loving it. Just compare the current classes to those of 5 and 10 years ago... I think we are in pretty good shape...

And for the lastest quote out of the Carrington article..

The due diligence performed by the Oregon coaching staff throughout the recruiting process thoroughly impressed Carrington’s parents. According to Darren Sr. “Oregon’s recruiting process is miles above everyone else’s. Their process was a 4-5 month process from start to finish…They spoke with his teachers, counselors, and coaches…The idea is they want kids they can trust. If they can trust him to go to class then they can trust him to run the 10 yard out called in the huddle rather than cutting it short.” The number of scholarships Oregon offers also stood out to the elder Carrington, “They don’t have nearly as many offers out there as other schools. They are very selective in the kids they want.”
