UO vs Okie - Keys for Oregon

  • Been reading up on Okie today and here are the keys I've come up with:

    1) Turnovers: UO needs to absolutely take care of the ball. Smart is one of the best guys in the country at getting steals, PG's aren't used to his length. I think we can have success on O once we get into our offense.

    2) Defensive Transition: Okie's not a total run and gun team but they depend on steals/fast break chances for a big part of their O. They're crazy athletic across the board. We need to make them beat us once our D is set. They're a bad 3 pt shooting team and have little "by-design" inside game. If we get set I think we can play a conservative man or some zone to limit penetration. I have confidence in CDA to figure out which D will slow them down. We just can't get killed in transition

    3) Outside Shooting - Okie is a solid D team but nothing off the charts good. The only full game I watched of them this year was @ISU and they gave up penetration all game. It was clearly not their best game but it showed small fast guards can get into the paint. I think the drive and kick game to CE/DD/ES should be there. I have little confidence in our bigs to generate "by-design" offense.

    4) Rebound - I think we have the toughness and size inside. This is a game where it would really help if the bigs can give us some free buckets (this will also limit there transition game). This is the one area we should have a clear edge. We need to exploit this.

    5) Experience - Okie is one of the youngest team in the country. Both teams are inexperienced in the tourny, getting Okie rattled early could really help us.

Okie is tough but I think UO can win this game. The 3 biggest things are taking care of the ball, transition D, and shooting well from the outside.

  • One of the big keys is that Artis needs to get going again. In the conference tourney he still didn't look close to 100% and the team scored more with Loyd in. Artis also made some clumsy turnovers.

But we're going to need Dominic to get it going for the Dance, because Smart will give Loyd way too much trouble.

  • Am I crazy to think E8 is possible? Missouri can very well beat Louisville in the round of 32 and New Mexico St can beat Saint Louis. We would have to go through NMSt in round of 32 and Missouri in S16 which would put us in the E8.

Even if we were to face Saint Louis in round of 32 we can still beat them. Especially after seeing UW beat them early in the season.

  • One game at a time.

I also believe Oklahoma states depth is fairly low. Run em into the ground for the first 30 min and hope they are tired for the last 10 minutes.

Thats what Kansas St did and it seemed to work.

  • We will have a harder time with OKST than we will with St. Louis.

You clearly don't know much about Oklahoma State.

This is one of the deepest Oklahoma State teams we've had in years (since 2004, Final Four year). We go 8 deep and it's spread out a lot more than most teams. Nash, Brown and Smart all average about 15 ppg, but all three could go off for 25-30 points in any game.

OSU doesn't get 'tired'. They were that way during the Big XII Tournament, I admit that... but in after a week + of being off? OSU won't get "run into the ground." by any team.

OSU is one of the best defenses in the nation, allowing just 62.8 ppg. That's the lowest allowed total since the Iba (for those that really know hoops, know how impressive that is). Against Iowa State (in Ames, the only game you watched), it wasn't penetration that was our problem... it was playing and losing (we split the season 1-1) to one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the country. Iowa State hit 7 of them and they were all when we would get close (2-3 points).

As for rebounding, Oklahoma State is a solid rebounding team... not just because of the big men, but our guards are crazy good. I've never seen a player like Smart, who is our PG, rebound like he does. Then you add Brown, two of the best rebounding guards (and shot blocking guards) in the nation. Smart has had game winning 'blocks' this year. I know Oregon is one of the best rebounding 'margin' teams, but I feel this will be a wash during the game because I don't think you've seen the likes of Brown, Nash and Smart (our guards/forwards) that rebound like they do.

Finally, yes we are young but that doesn't matter to this Cowboys team. OSU has gone on the road and beat the likes of Kansas. It's not afraid of playing in tournaments... to which it has gone and won them in Spain, Puerto Rico, etc.

Should be a good game. You guys got SCREWED with the seedings, but got a gift with location. OSU got screwed by being stuck playing the Ducks first round and 23 hours away from home while no Big XII team was placed in Austin (insane).
