Urban Meyers? oops

  • So he was with PK at the fiesta bowl and is now trying his best to steal 4 of our recruits. Funny how life is.

  • Urban doesn't care who's recruits they are he takes no prisoners in recruiting.

    jpsmith00

  • I used to like Urban but the more I followed him and his weasel ways, I think he's definitely a snake when it comes to recruiting. Ask the Big 10 how they think of his recruiting tactics.

    bigducker

  • What I really don't understand is why the coaches allow him to visit and learn our offense when he's going out there trying to run the exact offense and thus steal the recruits we're hoping to land.

    Kev33

  • he was friends with chip.... chip peaceis gone i don't see him coming anymore... lol peace

  • AND, to make this all the more nauseating, we have a home and home with this sleazeball jackass ...

  • Urban is the classic "praise jesus in public and then gouge your eyes out at the bottom of the pile" kind of coach. He uses his squeaky clean image to get away with being a real nasty football coach(not necessarily a bad thing). I wish more people saw through this kind of thing, but hey, it is what it is. Chip Kelly backed his talk with his walk. He'd tell recruits to their face he didn't need them. He'd tell their families he couldn't guarantee he'd be here. He'd never guarantee a position or a spot on a depth chart. He'd talk about honesty and trust and values and then go out there and demonstrated them in his daily life. Meyer is the opposite, the kind of weasel salesman who only sees the bottom line and will say anything to get what he wants. It's sad that so many people fall for it, but hey, he's a great coach and big time winner.

  • Also, his name is Urban Meyer. It makes you look like you are young/ignorant and are easily dismissed if you can't get his name right, imo.

  • If he were our coach we would absolutely love his recruiting style. So, not very fair to bash him.

  • Are there like some kind of unwritten rules, or gentleman's agreements in recruiting? If so, please fill me in. UO poaches on commits all the time, why doesn't anyone complain or claim unethical recruiting when we do it?

I guarantee Chip wouldn't pull some of the stuff Meyer's done. Or Bellotti, or I don't think Helfrich would either.

Urban really has no ethics when it comes to recruiting and I am concerned about losing Dontre, among others who visit.

    He's snake period!!

Badgers athletic director Barry Alvarez will speak Friday with Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany about Meyer’s recruiting methods during the league’s athletic director meetings in Chicago.
During his National Signing Day press conference, Bielema hinted that Meyer was using “illegal” recruiting practices. He said as much again Thursday when contacted by Sporting News, and without getting into specifics offered this:
“I called Urban and we spoke about it,” Bielema said. “We talked about it, and he said it would stop and it did. I’ll let our commissioner deal with anything else. That’s not who we are (in the Big Ten). We settle things among ourselves as coaches.”

Yea, and how many 100's of times have we (maybe not you personally, but we as a whole) complained about Chip not being nasty and aggressive enough on the recruiting trail?

Uh, I think Chip did pretty well recruiting.

So do I. But if you dont realize that there's a ton of Duck fans (myself included... even though i liked Chips end results) who wish he recruited more like Urban Meyer, then you're not paying attention.

Chip did get some late commits but I don't remember him being accused of sleazy recruiting tactics from other coaches.

Why do you think we're in the mess with the NCAA? Because Mack Brown, amongst others, accused Chip of sleazy recruitin tactics.

I would take Chip’s way of recruiting 1000 times over Meyer’s. How many players of Meyer that he recruited got arrested? Something like 22. Chip was totally trying to weed out the knuckle heads and was doing extremely well. Better every year. Chip was doing it the right way and who knows how many championships Oregon woukld have won if he'd have stayed the next 10 years with his type of guys.

I have NEVER seen an article that said Chip uses sleezy recruiting tactics, ever. Have you got a link ?
Almost every recruit and his family talked about how honest Chip was and how they appreciated it.

Well apparently we're talking about two different things. I'm not talking about lying or being dishonest. The article that you linked was talking about Meyer poaching players from other Big 10 programs. It said nothing about lying or dishonesty. We've seen Chip poach other schools players several times and I wish he would have tried to do even more of it. I'm not saying that i wanted him out there lying and negatively recruiting all over the place, just that I wish he would have been much more aggressive.

  • I am curious.......if Helfrich gives those who want a more sleazy aggressive recruiting style what they want..........yet produces less results on the field.....How long will it take for those same people to turn on those same tactics (and Helfrich) and long for the good ole chip recruiting days..........................since this scenario would require my Ducks to lose i hope it doesn't happen but to be honest there is a section of fans on here that display such hubris i am amazed we are fans of the same team.

    AngryDuck22

  • The bottom line is that Chip won big at Oregon, and Oregon fans love him. Urban will continue to win big at tosu, and buckeye fans will love him. Look at the way rival fans think of Chip. At uw, usc, and osu they can't stand the guy. They think he is an arrogant prick and a cheater who pulled a Pete Carroll and left just ahead of the ncaa. They feel about Chip the same way some of us feel about Urban.

All of these feelings of love and hate are part of the emotions of sport. If we didn't have them, sports wouldn't be nearly as fun. Its ok for us to love Chip and hate Urban a long as we understand that these feelings are really not rational. When we use these irrational feelings to justify what are passed off as rational opinions about people's character then we all need to check ourselves. We almost all do it at times but it is no better for us than it is for fans of other teams to make blanket statements that demonize Chip. And we love Helfrich already because he is our guy. But just wait, once Helfrich starts winning you can bet that rival fans will hate him too.

Ohio State has a big Nike deal, so no surprise really UM would be hanging out with PK. At the end of the day, Nike and Oregon benefits greatly from competition with OSU. The competition elevates both programs, it elevates college football.

Thirty years ago, Oregon was not mentioned in the same sentence with Bama, USC, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan, etc. In thirty short years, Oregon is now viewed as a leader, an innovator, on and off the football field (and our entire athletic program, which positively impacts our academic programs as well). To be copied by the likes of OSU (I don't get the little t) is a major accomplishment and testimony to how far this program has come. Would you rather OSU copy another program?

That OSU is recruiting our commits is another compliment to how good our talent is. If anyone wants to criticize UM for recruiting our commits, may want to be consistent and criticize MH for recruiting Falah, Hall, Prevot, Hunt, Porter, Kalambayi, James, Johnson and others. Think about it, Oregon is out recruiting commits from USC, Washington, Cal, TCU, Stanford, Wisconsin, among others.

Thirty years ago, we wouldn't be getting any of these guys to pick up the phone after they had committed to these teams. And it's very unlikely OSU will be able to recruit even one of our four commitments away.

There's a very good chance Oregon will be able to flip a few players and not lose any of its recruits. Competition is good, and we are competing and winning with the best of them.

Life is funny. And life if good if you are a Duck fan!
