What did the LSU loss teach Oregon?

  • Good observations Justin. I found your thoughts on the offensive line interesting. I didn't have quite as favorable of a review as you did, but they were facing one of the tougher d-lines in college football. I guess USC is the only other team on our schedule that will be comparable.

I found it paculiar that Paulson was not a bigger part of the offense and that Lyerla didn't see the field. Any idea why Lyerla didn't play? I thought he would see the field before Carson. Anyway, good thoughts. Thanks.

  • Also- Why are there advertisements for Beaver stuff on here? lol

Seems about the same as putting up ads for fresh steaks on PETA's website. Not going to be too many takers!

  • Hmmm, getting beat by damn near three touchdowns to a pretty one dimentional offense...I think more like a C-/D once you consider the mistakes and how they looked pretty unprepared and easily rattled.

I do agree on the other points, and getting Josh completely healthy, Kiko and Cliff back, and possibly using DAT more as a reciever brings visions of some ass kicking by the Ducks in the near future.

But when its my time to throw the next stone...

Hmm, I thought 13 points was less than 2 full touchdowns.

  • Justin, I think your assesment is pretty right on the money. I think it also shows us we should go the tune up game route. Heck even the NFL has pre season! smoke

  • Thank God next year features that tune up route.

  • WHAT!!! "The offensive line looked pretty good as a whole." ......WHAT?!?!!?

I must have seen a different game.....if one guy screwed up a few times I could see this, but the fact that the entire left side of our O-Line was terrible, not so-so, not bad, freaking terrible.....I just cant agree with you on that one.

I know we all have different opinions and not saying you are wrong, but I feel 100% differently then that statement.

  • I'm with most of the other posting Ducks on this: I think you had a good write up, Justin (I'm going to give you an A -), but I see your assesment of the offensive big boys differently.

At least I/2 of the offensive line -- the half with Golpashin & Weems -- was, well, offensive. There was a rash of penalties and even more missed or ineffective blocks.

Collaborative Group Offensive Line Grade: C
    Weems: D
    Golpashin: D-

  • I think the offensive line was worse in the first game last year than they were in the first game this year, and the talent difference was night and day. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt that they will be a solid squad. That's how I came up with my analysis on the O-line.

Let's be real, that IS the best D-line they will see all year long.

Because they played a stellar D and looked crappy doesn't make them any better though. Grasu, York, Asper, even Clanton played ok....but Golpashin and Weems were so bad that their play unfortunately has to be at the forefront of the groups performance grade.

The other guys did pretty good, but when 40% of your line sucks beyond belief the competition being good doesn't give them a pass if you ask me.

Coach Greatwood should be in these guys' ear all week long so that they dominate moving forward. Anything close to the performance we saw last night is a means for benching. They couldn't get the snap count 2x in a row at times, they simply pulled out on a DE that wasn't there letting a LB come through unscathed, they resorted to chop blocks, leg whips, etc. That from SR players is not permissible in our offense if we plan on winning games.

  • I was impressed with Grasu, I have a sense of comfort now since his position is of high importance. I agree with the comments about Weems and Golpashin, they were not the good at all. They all need time to gel though as every OL coach says and with the next 2 tune up games they will be ready by PAC-12 play. I am excited for a Ducks win now, I bet the players are hungry too and Nevada is going to be on the receiving end of the Ducks payback mentality.

If that last touchdown makes you feel better about the game...o.k.

I agree with what you are saying. Weems and Gopashin need to use these next two games to get nasty and up on their game. We need to bash the crap out of the next two opponents.

Also side note, I am thinking the Oregon/Nevada game might be a good bet to take. Home opener, Ducks will be favored by less because of the loss, and Nevada has not played yet, so they are still getting the hype from the Kapernick and Tua team that finished at #11 last year. I am interested to see the line.

    socalduck2001

  • Good observations J-Hop, thanks.

Again, I give Oregon a lot of credit for even scheduling this game. The majority of teams would be too scared to do so.
It also gives CK, a great barometer of what areas the team needs to improve in.

Oregon could've rolled a cup cake, but that wouldn't prepare them for the Pac-12 schedule.

  • Lesson #1: Don't schedule an away game against a power house to start the season ... particularly with a young team playing a bunch of guys in their very first college game. That said, it is hard to turn down Jerry Jones' money.

  • IMHO it was mistakes on top of more mistakes that lost the game. We are in it without them, that said I do not know if we would have won, but it would have been much more interesting and enjoyable if we had not shot ourselves in the foot. All the other stuff is just hyperbole IMO.

  • This still 10+ win team. Once the offense gets in sync, things will fall into place. Oregon took a HUGE risk playing a team of LSU's caliber this early and with this inexperienced of an offense. But time will be very good to the Ducks. I also think that last year's team, at their best, would have wiped the floor with LSU. But this isn't last year's team, y'all. Simple as that. They'll find their footing soon.

  • Very curious what everyone things about the many harsh/skeptical/concerned comments about the performance of out veteran running backs... Is LaMike truly slower and not the same? Is Barner truly hesistant? Was this a reaction to an intimidating LSU D-line and rookie Oregon O-Line -- i.e., hestitation = searching for a hole that doesn't exist -- or have these guys lost the spark from last season?

In any case, seems pretty early on in the season to be making final prognostications on anyone or aspect of our game....
