Why does pac12 basketball suck so bad?

  • I dont follow college basketball until it reaches the NCAA tournament and I dont think I could currently name a single basketball player in the pac 12 other then Garrett Sims and EJ Singler.

As a kid I remember UCLA and Arizona being top programs. Stanford and Cal were always good. Washington and UO had some success. But now, looking at the polls, not only is there not a pac12 team in the top 25, but there's not even a single pac12 team that got a single vote.

Are teams out here really that bad? Or do we all just beat each other bringing our records down, or what? And if we are as bad as the polls say we are... what is the reason for that?

  • It did take a huge dive the last few years. Arizona would have been fun to watch if Williams had stayed. Lots of coaching turnover probably had something to do with it. Hopefully Oregon changes it up a bit next year with D. Artis and a few others heading this way.

  • All the talented players jump to the NBA after one year.

Isnt that the same for every other conference too though?

Exactly. There is no one reason you can point to for the precipitous decline in quality. After K Love, the Lopez twins, etc. bolted the conference, it's like all these great programs could never recover...at least quickly

It's cyclical though. There is no systemic reason for the conference to be this bad. It'll turn around, but I find it strange.

Yes but the ACC/Big East/Big 12 top schools tend to get enough good recruits that they can stay consistent. Most Pac schools besides UCLA/Zona don't get those guys.

  • I'd be interested to know if more elite west coast high school players have been committing to schools back east in the last 3-4 years than in the past. I have no idea if that's the case or not, but I've been trying to figure out why the Pac 12 is SO bad recently as well. I love college b ball but have found it very difficult to get interested before the tourney lately.

That being said with the conference being so down it looks like the ducks have a legit shot to be a part of march madness, can't get too mad about that.

  • For how "down" the pac 12 was last year we had 3 teams in the sweet 16 and an elite 8 team. I'm curious to see how we do this year, but last year none of the teams where picked to get to the sweet 16.

FWIW Arizona has back to back top 5 classes and the #1 incoming class this year. If they can't turn it around soon Miller will be toast.

  • I don't know that any other conference has had more early entries into the NBA the last few years. It's crazy the amount of talent which UCLA and UA specifically have lost.

  • The Pac-12 has been hit hard by young players going pro but have also been equally been hit as hard by transfers from players out of the league.

Oregon: Michael Dunigan, Matt Humphrey, Josh Crittle, Drew Wiley, Jamil Wilson, and Malcolm Armstead

Have to think if Oregon had those players on this year's roster or even just guys like Humphrey, Wilson, and Armstead would go a long ways in getting Oregon farther along.

UCLA has been hit the hardest: Tyler Honeycutt, Drew Gordon, Chance Stanback, Mike Moser, Malcolm Lee, and Jru Holiday.

All could be on this year's roster. Lee and Holiday are in the NBA. Moser and Gordon are dominating at other schools.

Arizona has been hit with MoMo Jones and Derrick Williams from last year's team. Jones left because he was afraid the freshmen would take his spot when in fact he'd still be starting. Williams, in a regular situation made the right call going pro but has said if he knew there was going to be any kind of lockout he would have returned for his junior year at Arizona. With even just Williams the Wildcats are a top-15 team.

  • Wilson avg 6ppg, humph 9, Crittle 1.6. Maybe they where all overrated a little bit.

  • Wasn't the PAC something like 2-23 against BCS conferences in OOC games?

Something like that. I know Stanford beat NC State, CU beat Georgia, and the Ducks beat Neb, but 3 wins is still terrible.

The real problem and the reason for the mass exodus of talent out of the league has been the ridiculous amount of coaching turnover. 9 of the 12 teams have had a head coaching change since 08 and for non-prestige programs it usually takes time to recover when the roster gets gutted. Altman has done an amazing job making Oregon relevant in 2 years, but look how much roster trouble we had last year. If he hadn't gotten Woods/Ashaolu/Nared in as transfers I seriously doubt the Ducks would have a winning record right now. Other teams haven't been able to get those kinds of quick fixes and have struggled to recruit well enough to stay relevant.
